Compensation range: $150,000–$210,000 per annum



Work site: On-site (Washington, D.C., office)



 



Summary



The Chief Economist will provide thought leadership on economic issues and conduct rigorous economic analysis for American Progress as part of the Economic Policy department. The Chief Economist will contribute to shaping American Progress’ efforts to develop and advance a policy agenda promoting economic growth and opportunity. This effort is part of American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.



The Chief Economist will help manage American Progress’ relationships with outside stakeholders—including ally organizations, federal and state policymakers, and the media—on economic policy issues. The position requires overseeing and executing projects involving data analysis, research, and writing, as well as collaboration with experts across American Progress. While the Chief Economist’s work will be focused on economic topics, they will also be expected to collaborate with policy teams across the organization to formulate and execute data-driven economic analyses and provide advice on the development of economically sound policy solutions.



The Chief Economist will provide thought leadership to shape American Progress’ economic policy agenda. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of a broad range of issues in economic policy, including macroeconomic policy, finance, and labor market dynamics. They should be familiar with policymaking processes and have established relationships with key experts in the field.



Responsibilities:




  • Work closely with the Economic Policy department’s leadership and senior staff to help set the research agenda for economic policy.

  • Develop and produce original analyses of economic trends and economic policy interventions, including in collaboration with members of the Economic Policy department and other American Progress colleagues.

  • Advise colleagues and guide earlier-career staff in developing timely analyses, policy proposals, and rapid-response documents to influence policy outcomes.

  • Update American Progress staff regularly on news and events related to the economy.

  • Represent American Progress to the public, media, policymakers, and other external stakeholders on issues related to economics and economic policy as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Requirements and qualifications:




  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.

  • Graduate degree in economics or other closely related social science. Ph.D. in economics preferred.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including proficiency in R or Stata, and familiarity with federal statistics and data.

  • A track record of research and analysis in economic policy.

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Command of a broad range of issues in economic policy; expertise in macroeconomic policy or public finance is a plus.

  • Established relationships with economic experts, policymakers, and advocates.

  • Excellent presentation and written and oral communication skills, with experience with public speaking and writing.

  • Collaborative attitude toward team-based work, mentorship, and problem-solving.

  • Ability to balance a portfolio consisting of both longer-term projects and policy rapid response.
