Miami Public Schools is accepting applications for a Secondary Counselor for the 2026-2027 school year.
QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Oklahoma teaching/counselor certificate
Teaching experience as determined by the Board of Education.
Strong leadership and communication skills
Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
Cannot be related to any currently seated board of education member within the second degree of affinity or consanguinity.

JOB GOAL:
To assist students in the secondary schools with educational planning and personal-social development. To help students overcome problems that impede learning. In reaching the desired goals of individual counseling and group work, the person assigned to this position would work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assumes a leadership role in planning, developing, and initiating a sound, comprehensive (developmental and crisis) program for the school in cooperation with the principal and administrative staff as designated by Superintendent.
Works with all concerned persons in assisting them in understanding and appreciating the individuality of each student.
Maintains a daily log and/or plan book of activities.
Participates in weekly, planned meetings where counselors share information, consult on specific problems, develop, clarify, and maintain system-wide counseling programs.
Plans and leads counseling units designed to guide students and teachers to an increased awareness of self and others in the areas of feelings, values, careers, communication and specialized areas of concern (i.e., drugs, AIDS).
Works to identify and assist with the proper placement of exceptional students.
Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
Interprets the counseling program to the community and provides agencies with information on the needs of youth.
Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling department to improve individual student's opportunity for success in the classroom.
Counsels with parents toward meeting specific needs of their children and works with them to develop a plan of action.
Confers with teachers as a co-worker in developing a plan of action in an effort to better meet the needs of a student who is having educational, social, emotional or disciplinary difficulty.
Observes and studies pupil behavior in the classroom and other situations as requested in order to identify needs for special services.
Assists in identifying and facilitating referral of children with serious problems to other school or community services.
Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
Provides for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
Completes reports and other job related paperwork as required at or before the time requested.
Accepts the responsibility and arrives punctually for activities and duties as assigned.
Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with co-workers, principal, and assistant principal.
Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
Maintains appropriate emotional stability, physical health, and personal appearance.
Complies with the policies and procedures of the school district.
Makes recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships and provides student information to colleges and potential employers upon student and/or parent request.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employment considered annually in accordance with Oklahoma law. Salary and work year to be determined according to the current salary schedule and negotiated agreement.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
