The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking to fill multiple Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 positions to support operations on the SR 520 Floating Bridge in Medina, WA. In these hands-on roles, you will perform journey-level maintenance, repair, and operational work on one of the region’s most critical and unique transportation structures. From structural repairs to mechanical systems and marine-based work, your efforts will directly contribute to the safety, reliability, and longevity of this vital corridor. 


These positions play an important role in maintaining a safe and inclusive work environment while ensuring the bridge remains operational in all conditions.


What to Expect

These roles involve physically demanding, safety-critical work performed outdoors, often at heights, over water, and alongside live traffic in varying weather conditions. These positions generally work a 4-10 schedule and may be required to respond to emergencies or work nights, weekends, and holidays.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, you will:

  • Perform journey-level maintenance and repairs on structural and mechanical bridge components, including expansion joints, bridge rails, catwalks, decks, and alarm systems. 
  • Fabricate and repair steel and aluminum components using appropriate tools and techniques. 
  • Maintain and support systems such as navigation lighting, HVAC, fire systems, generators, and weather monitoring equipment. 
  • Conduct routine and post-event inspections to assess bridge integrity and pontoon conditions. 
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment including work boats, cranes, trucks, and under-bridge inspection equipment. 
  • Set up and perform traffic control in accordance with established safety standards and guidelines. 
  • Document work activities, inspections, and repairs using agency systems and tools. 
  • Promote a culture of safety by following procedures, using proper protective equipment, and identifying improvement opportunities.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Journey-Level Trade Expertise: Applies broad, hands-on experience in Construction, Steel fabrication, Carpentry, Electrician, Concrete, Mechanic or Millwright, or related trades to perform maintenance and repair work.
  • Mechanical: Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. 
  • Structural Systems Knowledge: Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood which includes the application of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of bridges, or other structures such as highways and buildings.
  • Engineering Application: Uses practical engineering principles to inspect, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with structures and systems.
  • Communication Skills: Shares information clearly and effectively with team members, supervisors, and external partner; Interacts professionally with the public and partner agencies, including in high-stress situations.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operates vehicles, boats, and specialized equipment in a variety of work environments.
  • Active Listening: Demonstrates attention and understanding when receiving instructions or feedback.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. 
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


The following qualifications are also required

  • A valid Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to get one within 6 months of employment. 
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Ability to work at elevated heights exceeding 100 feet, over land or water.
  • Ability to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County, and a 10% assignment pay.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
