Description

 

The Electrical and Instrument Technician will be responsible for electrical and instrumentation equipment related to the operation of a coal-fired 1700 MW plant. The E&I Technician-A is the first of four progressions to the E&I Technician position. A fully qualified Apprentice 1 is responsible for in-depth knowledge of the following plant equipment: Material Handling and removal systems, Coal Processing equipment, Generator, Excitation systems, Turbine and Boiler Control systems and High Voltage Electrical switchgear. The Apprentice 1 must also have a basic knowledge of all other equipment including equipment layout, nomenclature and purpose, and inspection guidelines for electrical and instrumentation equipment.

 

This position is accountable for maintaining electrical and instrumentation equipment in the generating station to ensure maximum availability and efficiency of equipment. Assisting in troubleshooting of instrumentation and electrical problems is required. The incumbent should understand analytical instrumentation, process controls, and computer systems including hardware and software including the Microsoft Family of software. The incumbent ensures all aspects of employee safety including implementation of safe work practices and promoting safety awareness. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under direct or general supervision, regularly and customarily work with the E & I Technician in the performance of their duties together with related and incidental work.
  • Does no work on or near energized conductors, structures or equipment, nor performs the most complicated types of instrument work, until after one year’s experience in which they may start working on or near energized conductors, structures, and equipment under close supervision.
  • Cleaning and routine inspection of instruments and allied equipment.
  • Adjustment and maintenance of the simpler type of instruments which do not require the full technical knowledge and experience of the Instrument Manual.
  • Under close supervision, may be required to assist in making combustion, furnace, burner, boiler, superheater, efficiency tests, etc.
  • Upon reaching Level IV and/or proficiency increases, the employee will begin to perform the more complicated types of instrument work under direct/general supervision.
  • Maintain plant electrical and instrumentation systems and equipment of the generating units
  • Assist in troubleshooting of instrumentation problems and/or electrical problems
  • Documents work performed to support maintenance information in Microsoft Dynamics 365
  • Observe all safety rules and be an active member of the Station Safety Committee
  • Upon occasion or in an emergency, other related or less skilled work as required or directed.

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED
  • Two-year, post-secondary education obtained from an accredited school in power plants, mechanical or electrical curriculum is desired. Related military experience is acceptable.  In lieu of education, three years’ industrial related experience is acceptable.
  • Successful completion of the entry POSS test and Ramsey Skill and Aptitude exam
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, off shifts, for forced outages, planned and maintenance outages 
  • Ability to learn station electrical and instrumentation systems and safety procedures.
  • Demonstration of mathematical aptitude 
  • Ability to rack out breakers and perform repairs while wearing appropriate PPE
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of basic cause and effect logic 
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle 
  • Good communication skills and demonstrated computer skills 
  • Ability to work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations up to 200 feet 
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, some requiring the use of respirators and other protective equipment 
  • Performance of duties requires working rotating, 8-hour shifts and response to calls 24 hours/day, seven days a week.
  • Emergency situations will require the use of respirator and climbing of stairs to reach safety shelters.

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
