Job Description

SUMMARY:



Registered Nurses supervise the work of the Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Aides and Ward Clerks and works cooperatively with all hospital departments. The RN provides professional nursing care to patients according to established procedure and coordinates care planning with other disciplines.



 



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 



Includes the following, but is not limited to any other duties or tasks that may be assigned:




  • maintains established departmental policy and procedures, objectives, continuous quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards and other administrative duties as assigned

  • documents initial nursing histories, assesses patient’s conditions and develops individual care plans for patients

  • administers and controls narcotics and medications

  • assists in formulating and screening Quality Assurance criteria and providing in-service training for staff

  • evaluates outcomes of patient care, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to ensure optimal patient care

  • monitors, maintains and ensures accuracy of recording patient care documentation

  • maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc

  • maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards

  • maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patients’ medical treatment

  • observes emotional stability of patients’ expresses interest in their progress and prepares for continuing care after discharge

  • assists other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines

  • assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care

  • demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and safety

  • arranges for patient’s ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services

  • monitors medical condition of the patient and reports changes to the appropriate personnel

  • enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops

  • attends meetings as required

  • ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment

  • cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations and interdepartmental objectives

  • orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel

  • demonstrates competency and professionalism in performing the overall patient care and supervisory responsibilities of the Registered Nurse position

  • assists with orientation of new personnel to the unit
