Job Description

The Barre Town Middle and Elementary School is seeking a permanent substitute to support our teaching staff for the 2025-2026 school year, working with students in grades PreK - 8. The rate of pay for this position is $18.00 per hour. We also offer a benefits package (Health Insurance, sick time, and personal time). Permanent substitutes are full-time school year employees and report to school every day, which is different from a typical substitute position.

POSITION GOAL: To ensure every student is able to pursue their education as seamlessly as possible during the absence of a classroom teacher. Our goal is to provide an educational environment where the students are the focus and center of attention.

CORE/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Receives daily placement from the substitute coordinator.

  • Review all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.

  • Maintains established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.

  • Teaches the lesson outlined and described in the Substitute Plans as prepared by the absent teacher.

  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior during times when under substitute supervision.

  • Completes reports on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day/period/block.

  • Follows policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject with good teaching practice.

  • Performs other duties as assigned when not assigned to a classroom.

Other duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting in the classroom, library/learning center, or other instructional setting.

  • Supervising students in areas outside of the classroom.

  • Supervising a study hall, in-school suspensions, etc.

  • Performing basic clerical duties for the schools’ administrative support staff.

  • Monitoring students in the hallways/lobby and in high traffic and gathering places.

  • Providing one-on-one academic support to students.

  • Substituting in classrooms and covering lunch/work breaks as needed.
