About The Role

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Early Childhood Services and in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the Ingham Intermediate School District, the Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Specialist (ECSE Teacher Specialist) is responsible for providing direct instruction, consultation, and coordination for eligible children from ages 2.5 through 5 years within settings.  The Specialist will work collaboratively with a team of staff, i.e. preschool teachers, PT., OT, SSW, and ASD T.C, to coordinate appropriate support for students in a variety of inclusive preschool settings in multiple school districts.  The ECSE Teacher Specialist will assist students in achieving the maximum level of functional independence possible within their capabilities, within the least restrictive environment, that meets the students’ and families’ needs.

  • Provides developmental assessments for determination of eligibility for 2.5 through 5-year-old children and monitoring of child progress within special education services.
  • Serve as a member of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team and the Individual Educational Planning Committee.
  • Provides instruction for a mixed age as well as varied student disabilities in inclusive preschool settings.

About You

  • Possess a valid Michigan Teacher’s Certificate with a special education endorsement.
  • An early childhood endorsement is preferred.  A special education endorsement with a willingness to seek an early childhood endorsement would be considered.
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience.

Teacher Specialist

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides developmental assessments for determination of eligibility for 2.5 through 5-

2. Serve as a member of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team and the Individual
Educational Planning Committee.
3. Provides instruction for a mixed age as well as varied student disabilities in inclusive
preschool settings.
4. Develop and work toward achievement of performance objectives for each assigned
student, with a system for data collection and evaluation for these objectives.
5. Demonstrate ability to instruct students individually in a variety of inclusive
preschool settings, based on knowledge of child growth and development and using
multi-sensory techniques.
6. Provides consultation to and works as a team with general education preschool
teachers and other professionals to support and meet individual performance
objectives.
7. Establish a positive relationship with teachers and families, and communicate with
them regularly about growth, progress, problems and successes.
8. Serve as a resource to families of students with disabilities, providing information
and/or contacts for support, assistance or knowledge of their child's disability.

9. Work cooperatively with general education preschool staff, ancillary staff, office staff,
administration and community service agencies.
10. Utilizes ongoing assessments for all children to monitor progress and document present levels
of functioning.
11. Provides service coordination, and develops and reviews IEP’s with families of children
receiving special education.
12. Develops relationships with community agencies, school districts and preschool providers
for interagency service coordination.
13. Completes and maintains documentation and data regarding services in accordance with
special education.
14. Assumes other related responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Early Childhood
Services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Possess a valid Michigan Teacher’s Certificate with a special education endorsement.
2. An early childhood endorsement is preferred. A special education endorsement with a
willingness to seek an early childhood endorsement would be considered.
3. Minimum of three years teaching experience.
4. Full approval as a Teacher of Early Childhood Special Education.
5. Knowledge and experience working with young children 2-1/2 through age five and their
families in preschool settings preferred.
6. Knowledge and experience assessing and teaching children with atypical development using
the curriculum and assessment tools provided by the IISD and local school districts.
7. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with administrators, staff,
agencies, community preschool providers, medical providers, young children and their
families.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Specialist will support local school districts as part
of Ingham ISD special education services This position requires travel, for which staff must provide
their own transportation. This position will interface with LEA, IISD, community preschool
providers, community agency personnel and families.
