Job Description

Position Summary

The Community Engagement Coordinator advances MPR|APM’s priority initiatives aimed at audience growth, increased connections to Friends and Members, in-person events, and online content highlighting MPR’s programming that reflect all of Minnesota. The Community Engagement Coordinator will work to strengthen volunteerism at MPR|APM, be visible at fairs, festivals, and other events across the state of Minnesota, and be a booster/manager for educational and community organizing activities. This entry-level role will manage the day-to-day infrastructure that enables accessible, welcoming, and well-organized volunteer and community engagement including tracking expenses, documenting contacts with volunteers, event set up, ordering needed supplies, etc. This position will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of a public media company and will work closely with a large Membership and Philanthropic Development team.

* This is a full-time temporary position, 5-months.

Expected Compensation Range: $26-$29 per hour. The exact hourly rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Location: Hybrid, Saint Paul, MN

Program Purpose

The MPR|APM Community Engagement Initiatives are developed to:

  • Deepen relationships with our community, audiences, and external stakeholders through direct contact
  • Create opportunities for participation across Greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities
  • Amplify public media’s values of trust, service, and civic connection
  • Support team-based volunteering (internal) and family-friendly engagement (external)
  • Build pathways for data-informed impact reporting and potential philanthropic support
  • Establish a resource list that supports diverse engagement and community connection across the region

Core Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of this job will include event planning, participation, and follow up. This position assists with plans for MPR participation in community events across the State of Minnesota including county fairs, Pride festivals, music festivals, community events, parades, neighborhood gatherings, the Minnesota State Fair, etc. Setting up the MPR booth or table, meeting and greeting, and then returning materials to MPR on evenings and weekends will be a big part of this job. During events, the Coordinator will take photos and videos for social media and record keeping. The Coordinator will also be responsible for volunteer management activities including recruiting, onboarding, managing volunteer assignments for events and activations, and partnering with internal teams to ensure volunteers are prepared and supported. The Coordinator maintains records and participation tracking to support continuous improvement and impact reporting and strengthens volunteer retention through consistent follow-up and recognition.

Community Engagement Operations

This position also provides operational support to the Community Engagement team by coordinating scheduling, meeting logistics, documentation, and follow-through for engagement initiatives. The Coordinator works across departments to keep engagement-related workflows organized and supports simple process improvements that make it easier for staff to execute community-centered work with a philanthropic lens.

Required Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in community engagement, volunteer coordination, events, nonprofit, or a related field
  • Experience with public speaking, engaging in events with crowds
  • Experience coordinating logistics across multiple stakeholders and shifting priorities
  • Experience with CRM/database tools (Salesforce preferred)
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Flexible schedule required -ability to work evenings/weekends and travel in Minnesota as needed
  • Experience with social media platforms –specifically, Instagram and TikTok

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to build trust with volunteers and partners through clear communication and a service-oriented approach
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams (e.g., Events, Marketing, Membership, News)
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage information with discretion
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated photography, video, video editing, and social media skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive, welcoming engagement practices

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience launching, building, or scaling a volunteer program
  • Familiarity with volunteer program risk practices (waivers, supervision expectations, youth participation guidelines)
  • Experience with metrics, tracking, and reporting for engagement or volunteer programs
  • Interest in public media and community-centered public service

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with reasonable accommodation
