The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems on campus.
Under general supervision, the Instrumentation & Controls Technician (I&CT) will provide journeyperson or technician level skills in the trade as defined by the Industrial Training Authority of BC (ITA), BC Safety Authority and/or recognized licensing or training institutions.). Technician will install, repair, maintain, replace, calibrate, program, and service all process monitoring and/or control instruments including indicators, recorders, control loops and computers. Control mediums such as pneumatics, hydraulic, electronic, electrical or mechanical shall be included in the scope of work.
Regulated work shall be performed only by incumbents holding required qualifications. Incumbent will perform related duties of similar scope and complexity in collaboration or independently within a multidisciplinary shop and full service facilities department which provides such services as plant and facilities engineering maintenance services. The incumbent will also assist in emergent situations, as reasonably declared by the employer, within the physical and skill capacity of the individual.
Shall conform to all best practices in relation to UVic, regulated and industry standards of work and behaviors, including compliance to Worksafe BC regulations.
Experience:
- 5 years at the journey person/technician level in applicable trade preferably in an institutional environment.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship or formal training program acceptable to employer.
- Instrumentation & Controls Technician (Mechanic) TQ.
- Limited Electrical Work TQ. (i.e. Heating, Low Energy or class C Endorsement)
- Extensive Direct Digital Controls (DDC) experience.
- Extensive pneumatic control experience.
- Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) experience.
- Extensive institutional HVAC experience or equivalent.
Skills:
- Ability to use initiative and varied skills in diagnosing and effecting repairs.
- Ability to carry out an effective work schedule, under general supervision and utilize materials and equipment for maximum benefit.
- Ability to plan and organize work efficiently.
- Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.
- Ability to operate and maintain control systems.
- Literate in the use of personal computers and the MS office suite.
- Ability to use resources and supplies in an efficient and cost effective manner.
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
- Ability to use hand and power tools effectively (both fixed and portable) i.e. tools associated with mechanical trades including multi meters and other typical diagnostic equipment.
- Competency in soldering, brazing, tack and cutting (with torch or electric).
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to work any recognized shift including weekends.
- May be required to assist with departmental response to emergent and safety related concerns.
