Responsibilities

Take your nursing career up another level with Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine! In our state of the art facilities, you are able to work directly with our surgeons using your education and talents to take care of athletes of all ages and skill level. Our team is fast paced and efficient with the focus on patients and their care. In this role, you will prep patients for surgery as well as monitor and care for them immediately after the procedure. 

 

Position Purpose:  The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the facility.  Prepare patients for surgical procedures, monitors and cares for patients post-operatively and prepares patients for discharge.  Responsible for conducting business and patient care activities consistent with the hospital's policy for Patient's Rights and Responsibilities without discriminating against the individual because of sex, age, race, or religion or any other potentially discriminating factor.  Responsible for the discrete and confidential handling of all patient information whether written or spoken, and to be ever vigilant and sensitive to where and how any patient information is shared.

 

Job Knowledge

  • Assesses, plans, evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patient's care to achieve identified outcomes.
  • Assumes a leadership role in the provision of quality nursing care for patients receiving care.
  • Clinical Activities
    • Admission assessment upon patients arrival
    • Documents response to nursing action
    • Treats patients and family with courtesy, respect and professionalism
    • Provides pre & post operative instructions, verbal and written to the patients understanding
    • Stocks unit and carries out unit routine, check crash cart and counts narcotics
    • Follow up phone calls and cards are sent to patients. Documents per unit policy . Follows surgery schedule and anticipates patient arrival
    • Responsible for patient's admission and preop care, holistic preparation for surgery considering all needs utilizing preference cards.
    • Documents all unusual occurrences and post-operative complications for QI follow up.
    • Frequent ongoing assessment of patients condition.
    • Prompt administration of pain and anesthesia nausea medications when indicated.
    • Responsible for managing patient care during fluoroscopic procedures
    • Participates in patient care activities and adheres to requirements of RN job description when providing patient care as evidenced by:
  • Resource and Inventory Management
    • Careful use of supplies and medicines to avoid waste.
    • Reports to charge nurse when supplies are low and need ordering.
    • Keeps accurate time records
    • Stocks units with supplies/drugs as needed
    • Helps keep supplies neat and organized
    • Ensures proper use of resources (time and supplies) as evidenced by:
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • 100% of regulatory concerns or unusual occurrences are reported to supervisor nurse within 24 hours of occurrence.
    • When patient injury or disaster occurs, administration is notified immediately.
    • RN license and ACLS certification kept current and kept on file at the hospital
    • Complies with state rules/regulations and the Joint Commission standards as evidenced by:
  • Safety
    • Attends monthly staff meeting as documented in attendance records.
    • Identifies, corrects and reports unsafe conditions immediately
    • Maintain unit in safe condition as evidenced by cleared hallways, secured electrical wiring and reporting of broken equipment promptly. Adheres to all facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety as evidenced by:

  • Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care.
  • Interacts with all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional facility environment.
  • Displays a caring and responsive attitude and conducts all activities respecting patient, family and employee rights and expectations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all facility and patient information as required by facility policy.
  • Fosters a positive and professional facility environment by interacting with all persons in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner and by participating as a team member.
  • Diffuses/resolves conflict by appropriately communicating with those involved.
  • Accepts constructive criticism and gives suggestions in a professional manner.

 Leadership

  • Utilizes time effectively.
  • Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
  • Adheres to established surgical hospital safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Demonstrates the competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities. 
  • Identifies potentially unsafe conditions, takes action and notifies one-up.
  • Completes all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by facility policy.
  • Practices infection control and standard precautions as instructed or trained.
  • Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for department and surgical hospital.

 

     

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Work is indoors in climate-controlled environment.  Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids that may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards.  Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and feel objects.  Ability to climb, pull, push, and kneel. Ability to push a stretcher/wheelchair with a patient.  Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 lbs.  Ability to wear lead apron and push heavy equipment. 

 

DEGREE OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO POSITION:

Minimal.  Must be self-directed and able to work independently


Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.  Current ACLS preferred and PALS certificate preferred. 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in PACU, ICU OR ER nursing preferred.

Licenses or Certifications: Current licensure to practice in the State of Ohio.  Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course; ACLS preferred and PALS preferred.
