Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consulting Engineer in our Edmonton region. Reporting to the Edmonton Engineering Operations Manager, the Consulting Engineer will provide consulting engineering services to a variety of clientele, ensuring that we create superior client experiences for all Electrical Engineering projects. Supervision of a group of 3-12 staff (engineers, engineers in training, technologists, designers, and drafters) is required.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Client Management (40% time commitment):

 

  • Identify and seek out leads with potential clients.  Coordinate activities with Marketing personnel to achieve a collaborative effort with the goal of creating confidence within industry for Magna IV Engineering’s capabilities.
  • Identify, coordinate and implement operations initiatives that will provide solutions that satisfy the problems of our clients
  • Foster a culture of strong client relationships and support team members in establishing strong relationships and communication with clients
  • Identify opportunities for proposals, draft proposals, and explain/negotiate proposals with clients or delegate to the applicable project manager(s)
  • Develop proposals based on audits, studies, and recommendations in response to client requests
  • Interact with clients in a courteous and professional manner

 

Design Engineering (40% time commitment)

 

  • Apply practical application experience and knowledge of electrical systems
  • Lead project teams effectively through collaboration, support, and team focus
  • Provide expertise and consulting on electrical projects
  • Work safely around low, medium, and high voltage electrical systems in a variety of environments, including utilities, manufacturing, mining, and oil and gas
  • Write specifications for the supply of power delivery equipment and services
  • Complete technical report writing
  • Mentor team members

 

Project Management (10% time commitment)

 

  • Oversee all aspects of Engineering projects being executed by technical personnel, and project managers in your group 
  • Provide engineering services to support Technical Field Services projects
  • Plan resources effectively and work collaboratively with other regions to share resources
  • Manage projects ranging in values from $10,000 to multi-million
  • Ensure proper, complete preparation is done for scheduled work
  • Ensure safe work process is executed with each job and a culture of safety is fostered
  • Ensure work is properly executed and follows Quality Assurance procedures
  • Ensure completion of reports and follow up with clients to ensure satisfaction and completeness of work
  • Complete project invoicing with the support of Accounting personnel
  • Coordinate projects with other regions to ensure smooth transition of workloads

 

Business Objectives: (5% time commitment)

 

  • Work collaboratively with Senior Leadership to set objectives aligned with Magna’s overall goals for growth in expertise, services and volume
  • Ensure that your team meets and exceeds objectives and goals, and reports accurately on such
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of the annual operating budget
  • Work with Engineering Operations Manager to measure department performance as it relates to staff utilization and project margins
  • Promote a common understanding and commitment to department and project objectives
  • This position has Revenue, Profit Margin, and Efficiency targets, commensurate with experience and salary of the candidate

 

People Leadership: (5% time commitment)

 

  • Manage direct reports through strong people leadership skills and a drive for results
  • Organize, motivate, and coordinate Engineering Team Members (including Project Managers, and Technical Specialists) who are responsible for project proposals, client management, project execution, leadership and mentorship of team members
  • Determine team resource needs based on estimated workload forecasts and execute recruitment of appropriate talent with Human Resources
  • Manage the performance of all Team Members through ongoing coaching, recognition, performance management, and compensation
  • Identify and develop team members to ensure we meet the highest performance standards while developing team members within their current role and for future roles; to be a source of talent for Magna
  • Support and implement employee engagement practices to ensure we can attract and retain the best talent

Requirements

  • Electrical Engineering Degree (or equivalent)
  • 10 years of proven experience in Electrical Engineering and Project Management, including Professional status registration with APEGA or ASET
  • A minimum of 5 years of People Management experience
  • Experience in some or all of the following industries:
    • Public Infrastructure
    • Buildings
    • Utilities
    • Oil and Gas
    • Manufacturing
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to engage and motivate a team to achieve organizational goals
  • Possesses a positive attitude, is highly self-motivated, energetic, passionate and reliable
  • Goal oriented with dedication to exceptional client experiences
  • Proven ability to proactively and effectively communicate with various cross functional stakeholders to achieve operational excellence
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills that leverage your relationships to achieve success both through direct and indirect authority
  • Experience in dealing effectively and quickly with change in a fast-paced and dynamic business environment
  • Ability to multi-task, exercise good judgment and prioritize workload through outstanding organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel (varies week to week, typically day trips or single overnight)
