Job Description

Responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and performance of UCCU’s commercial lending division, including commercial real estate and construction lending. Oversee credit risk, portfolio management, regulatory compliance, sales and service delivery, and underwriting functions.  Provides vision and direction to a team of commercial loan officers ensuring delivery of competitive and compliant commercial lending solutions that support the financial success of the organizations membership and long-term growth strategies. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

1. Strategic Leadership & Program Oversight 

a. Lead the strategic direction of UCCU’s commercial lending programs, ensuring alignment with credit union goals and members needs. 

b. Oversee development of products and services across commercial real estate, construction, and participation programs. 

c. Establish performance goals, financial targets, and growth strategies for the commercial lending division.

d. Represent commercial lending, providing reports and recommendations to senior leadership and executive team. 

2. Lending Operations & Portfolio Management

a. Direct the management of UCCU’s commercial loan portfolio, ensuring balance between growth, profitability and risk.  Managing concentration risks, and regulatory limits are within regulation and policy guidelines. 

b. Oversee loan origination, underwriting, closing, servicing processes, and member satisfaction.

c. Monitor loan performance, including delinquencies, concentrations, charge-offs, and credit risk exposure, in compliance with NCUA regulations.

d. Assists in approvals or recommendations for loan requests within assigned lending authority. 

3. Compliance & Risk Management

a. Ensure commercial lending and commercial construction lending operations comply with NCUA Regulations, SBA requirements, internal policies, and applicable laws.  

b. Oversee audits, reviews, and regulatory examinations, implementing corrective actions as needed.  

c. Oversees all collections and foreclosure activities.  

d. Directs repossessed property management and disposition of commercial properties.

e. Oversees and ensures property inspections are thorough and regularly updated.

f. Partner with Credit Administration and Risk teams to maintain prudent credit standards, policy adherence, and strong internal controls. 

g. Stay current on regulatory changes, industry trends, and best practices affecting commercial and business lending.

4. Sales, Service & Community Engagement

a. Drive portfolio growth of commercial and commercial construction lending through proactive member engagement, referral partnerships, and community involvement.

b. Champion a culture of care and service excellence, ensuring members receive high-quality financial solutions and world-class support. 

c. Build and maintain relationships with business leaders, developers, real estate professionals, and community organizations. 

5. Leadership & Talent Development

a. Provide direct leadership and coaching to all direct reports and staff. 

b. Develop and mentor a high-performing leadership team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

c. Ensure staffing levels, training, and succession planning support current and future growth initiatives. 

d. Promote the Credit Union's professional reputation is maintained both internally and externally.

e. Leads and participates in meetings and committees as required.  Serves as a member of the Business and commercial loan committees.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

1. Department functions are effectively and efficiently completed in accordance with established Credit Union policies, procedures, standards, and related program and legal requirements.  Safe and sound lending practices are maintained.

2. Service and quality goals are met.  Suggestions for improved service are developed and implemented.  The integrity of the loan portfolio is maintained.

3. Portfolio growth and sales goals are met with quality production standards consistent with credit policy while maintaining controlled risk ratings and keeping delinquency and losses to minimum levels.

3. Department policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and modified as needed.  Appropriate departmental and employee goals are formulated.

4. Loan documents, account records, and related files are complete, accurate, and timely.

5. Department personnel are well trained, effective, efficiently utilized, and well supervised.  Assistance is provided as needed.

6. Professional business relations exist with members and external business contacts.  Questions and problems are promptly and courteously resolved.  Assistance is provided as needed.

7. Effective working relations exist with Credit Union personnel and with management.  Assistance is provided as needed. Management is appropriately informed.

8. Works a regular and predictable schedule. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field; or equivalent combination of experience and education. Master’s degree preferred. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Thorough understanding of commercial lending.

Complete knowledge of business lending regulatory requirements, and documentation.

Understanding of collections procedures and related legal actions.

Familiarity with property management.

Understanding of Real Estate Appraisal techniques (commercial) and title issues.

Knowledge of managerial practices, credit union policies and market best practices

Strong knowledge of commercial real estate, construction, small business and SBA loans.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Minimum of five years of related commercial lending experience.

Minimum of five years of supervisory or managerial experience.

Experience handling problem loans and loan workouts.

Experience with the foreclosure process and related litigation.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Strong leadership and supervisory skills.

Excellent financial analysis abilities.

Solid communication and negotiation abilities.

Strong public relations skills.

Able to use all related computer applications and business machines.
