About the Department
The work involves the responsibility of managing the Transportation Planning Division of Orange County Transportation Department in coordination with local, state, regional, and federal agencies. An employee in this class oversees the day-to-day activities of the division including planning, programming, implementing and administering transportation planning strategic initiatives, projects, policies and procedures. An employee in this class has responsibility including supervision, oversight, performance analysis, writing policy, preparing and reporting statistical data and maps; and is expected to build and maintain partnerships and work collaboratively to achieve agency and regional goals.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Director with considerable leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Independent judgement is utilized in prioritizing work, accomplishing projects, and in making decisions regarding various needs and requests. Supervision over others is required of this position. Position does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in public administration, transportation planning, GIS, or closely related field AND five (5) years of work experience in managing multimodal transportation operations including progressive work responsibility in transportation planning; which includes three (3) years of work experience in directly supervising staff; OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above. A higher degree does not substitute for work experience
A master’s degree is preferred.
Candidates certified as an American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP, Professional Transportation Planner (PTP), or Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
