Job Description

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I to perform a variety of tasks in the Street Maintenance division, duties to include: 

  • Operate a dump truck to transport materials such as sand, stone, gravel, and concrete

  • Operate a light-duty truck to transport tools, equipment, and supplies to and from job sites for maintenance and repair work.

  • Operate motor vehicles for snow removal or sanding of icy streets and roadways

  • Assist with loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck

  • Perform additional job duties requiring similar skills, knowledge, and physical capabilities as those outlined above. The Supervisor will determine specific assignments based on current workload demands and departmental needs.

  • Comply with safety and drug testing requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal and organizational policies. 

**Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by Virginia or North Carolina. 

** Pre-employment required physical. 

CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment: 

·         $1,000 with first paycheck 

·         $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating) 

·         $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
