Upcoming Scheduled Salary Increase of 3% Effective July 2026
This vacancy may be underfilled with an Associate Traffic Engineer. The Associate Traffic Engineer is a non-management, non-exempt position. The annual salary range for Associate Traffic Engineer is $111,556.03 - $135,598.07.
Position Duties
- Designs, supervises and participates in the preparation of drawings, maps, grade sheets, profiles, plans and specifications related to a variety of traffic engineering projects;
- Performs complex traffic studies;
- Assists in establishing priority schedules;
- Analyzes and implements traffic signal timing plans;
- Analyzes accident history;
- Conducts traffic condition and speed surveys, traffic counts and volume analyses, accident and parking surveys and intersection capacity analyses;
- Prepares traffic signal, sign and striping and traffic control plans, work orders and cost estimates;
- Manages overload, oversize and annual haul permit program;
- Prepares and maintains logs, reports, records and schedules;
- Evaluates the need and justification for traffic signals, stop signs and other traffic control devices; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be:
SENIOR TRAFFIC ENGINEER:
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in engineering; and
EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and recent experience in Traffic Engineering with at least three (3) years at an Associate Traffic or Civil Engineer level.
ASSOCIATE TRAFFIC ENGINEER:
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in engineering; and
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of progressively responsible and recent experience in Traffic Engineering.
FOR SENIOR AND ASSOCIATE TRAFFIC ENGINEER:
Registration as a Professional Traffic Engineer in the State of California is required at the time of hire.
Registration as a civil engineer may be substituted, provided significant traffic engineering experience can be demonstrated.

The City may change these testing and interview dates at its discretion due to departmental staffing and operational needs.
Other Qualifications
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment. A safe driving record is required and must be maintained during period of employment.
