The Youth Sports Intern supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Sports Program Director, the Youth Sports Intern will assist in the development and success of the Youth and/or Adult Sports programs in the community.
This position is ideal for students (via the LaunchGVL program) interested in youth sports management, recreation programming, and leadership development. The intern will assist in planning and delivering sports programs, collaborate with YMCA staff and volunteers, and build practical skills in program coordination, community engagement, and professional communication.

- Assist the Sports Coordinator and Director with development and the implementation of programs within the Sports Department.
- Assist the Sports Coordinator and Director with providing leadership and excellence in program service and delivery, through proper training, evaluation, and promotion of programs.
- Assist the Sports Coordinator and Director with monitoring and maintaining accurate records as it relates to all program areas.
- Assist the Sports Coordinator and Director with giving guidance and direction to sports participants and volunteers.
- Assist the Sports Coordinator and Director with maintenance of equipment and inventory and program areas.
- Develops relationships for the advancement and promotion of the YMCA Sports Program.
Other Expectations
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
- Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
- Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
- Follow mandated reporting requirements.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the internship, the intern will:
- Gain hands-on experience in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of youth sports programs within a nonprofit organization.
- Develop leadership and supervision skills by supporting program participants, volunteers, and staff.
- Strengthen administrative and organizational abilities through recordkeeping, equipment management, and program coordination.
- Build professional relationships and engage with the community to promote YMCA sports initiatives.
- Knowledge of recreation, physical education or some related field or equivalent work experience.
- Experience working with youth of all ages.
- Knowledge of the following sports: baseball, basketball, football, track& field, and soccer, e.g., rules, field dimensions, lining fields, etc.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Possess skills in relationship building e.g. excellent communication skills.
- Have a full understanding of YMCA philosophy and live, work and perform work duties in a manner consistent with such.
