Job Description

About the Department

Summary: Under direction of the Superintendent and Road Foreman, leads a crew of Equipment Operators and Utility Maintenance Workers in performing skilled and unskilled maintenance activities in performing the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, bridges and facilities in Precinct 1.

Position Duties

Essential Job Functions: Upon receiving assignments, estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete the work; leads, directs, and participates in all work performed by the crew; troubleshoots problems; inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to the Foreman and Superintendent; trains crew members on the use of equipment; operates light and heavy equipment and performs various manual tasks; assists during emergency situations (floods, hurricanes, accidents, etc.). Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.

Other Job Functions: Performs other job related duties, as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; minimum five (5) years of experience in roadway maintenance work or related field. Related technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. High School diploma or GED preferred.

Specialized Requirements: Texas Commercial Drivers License and acceptable driving record required. May be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of safety practices and basic skills in operating appropriate equipment prior to appointment.

Other Qualifications

Equipment Used: Must be able to operate/use a variety of road work equipment with expert proficiency, including: Gradall, road grader, iron wheel and rubber wheel rollers, maintainer, oil distributor, spreader box, rock box, sheep foot, backhoe, front-end loader, bush hog, mixer, tractors, slope and side mowers, hand/power tools and equipment necessary for the routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, and materials used in roadway maintenance work; Knowledge of applicable safety rules/practices; Skill in use of roadway maintenance tools and equipment; ability to lead; train; plan and direct the work of others; estimate materials and equipment; analyze and solve problems; maintain accurate records; work under variable weather conditions; communicate effectively; work effectively with other employees and the public.

Work Situations/Demands/Efforts: Job requires flexibility in order to perform a variety of tasks; performing routine, repetitive duties; driving trucks and operating heavy road equipment.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily outside. Employee is subject to adverse weather and environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, humidity, and precipitation; noise and vibration from heavy equipment; physical hazards from moving machinery, equipment with moving parts, and traffic; adverse atmospheric conditions from dust, fumes and chemicals.

Physical Requirements: Job duties require very heavy work; may move materials and equipment in excess of 50lbs. by lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; constant climbing into and out of equipment, standing, sitting and/or walking may be required. Duties require appropriate safety precautions.
