About the Department
The Part-Time Summer Day Camp Counselor is responsible for providing a safe, engaging, and positive camp experience for children ages 5–11. Counselors actively interact with participants throughout the entire work period by planning and directing games, assisting with crafts, leading activities, and ensuring the overall well-being of campers.
This position requires high energy, strong leadership skills, and the ability to serve as a positive role model while fostering a fun and structured environment. This position reports to the Recreation Coordinator or the Facility Supervisor.
Position Duties
- Assist children with arts, crafts, and creative activities.
- Provide a variety of recreational and educational activities appropriate for assigned age groups.
- Nurture, counsel, and mediate conflicts between children.
- Organize and direct daily games, activities, and enrichment classes.
- Administer basic first aid for minor injuries and follow proper reporting procedures.
- Keep the Site Supervisor informed of any concerns involving participants or staff.
- Communicate with parents regarding participant concerns as directed by the Site Supervisor.
- Supervise children during breakfast, snack, and lunch periods.
- Assist with set-up and clean-up before all meals, including sweeping and mopping.
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of program areas and storage rooms.
- Interact with children throughout the entire work period to ensure engagement and supervision.
Chaperone campers on daily and weekly field trips, including:
Swimming
Bowling
Movies
Other approved recreational destinations
Ensure safety and supervision during transportation on Lancaster County Parks & Recreation buses.
Enforce program rules, safety procedures, and department policies.
Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 17 years of age.
Experience working with children preferred.
CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain before camp begins).
Ability to pass background check.
Must be available for the duration of the summer camp season.
Must pass a drug test.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and actively participate in games for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
Ability to accompany children on field trips and recreational outings.
Seasonal summer position.
Hours generally between 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM (shifts assigned within this timeframe).
Monday through Friday.
Mandatory training before the camp starts.
