Job Description

Location: Cary, NC 

Job Accountability/Responsibilities:

Essential Functions – Leadership & Strategy: 

  • Execute the company's railcar services strategy, aligning with financial, operational, and customer objectives.
  • Provide oversight of repair programs, vendor management, and maintenance planning to ensure safety, compliance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide oversight of lease management to ensure safety, compliance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Audit billing repair cards (BRCs) and work orders to ensure all repairs are properly documented and priced according to AAR rules and customer agreements.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies to position Railinc as an innovative leader in fleet services

 

Essential Functions – Operational Oversight:

  • Ensure optimal fleet utilization by overseeing repair, inspection, and compliance programs across all railcar types.
  • Audit repair work orders, billing repair cards, and vendor invoices to verify accuracy, compliance, and adherence to customer agreements.
  • Partner with commercial and product management teams to design scalable service models that integrate digital tools (e.g., CarLogix, TransmetriQ Platform).
  • Maintain strong relationships with railroads, repair shops, and leasing companies to proactively resolve service bottlenecks and capacity challenges.
  • Establish metrics, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms to track fleet health, downtime, repair turnaround times, lease performance, and cost efficiency.

 

Key Measures:

  • Fleet availability and downtime metrics.
  • Compliance with AAR, FRA, and other regulatory standards.
  • Service Level Agreement (SLA) performance.
  • Customer satisfaction, retention, and growth metrics.
  • Cost savings and operational efficiency improvements.

 

Knowledge, Skills, abilities/minimum requirements/competencies:

  • Deep expertise in freight and tank car maintenance, repair regulations, and inspection processes.
  • Strong business acumen with proven ability to balance operational, financial, and customer priorities.
  • Skilled negotiator with experience in vendor and contract management.
  • Effective communicator (written and verbal) with executive presence and ability to engage at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency with railcar management systems, data analysis tools, and MS Office.

 

Education, experience, certification/training:

  • 5+ years of experience in railcar fleet management, maintenance planning, or related rail services.
  • Demonstrated success in a leadership role with multi-team or multi-site accountability.
  • Strong knowledge of AAR and FRA rules and industry standards.
  • Experience with digital fleet management platforms preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary work: Assignment involves sitting at workstation (desk) most of the time (up to 8 hours) with only occasional walking and/or standing.
  • Keyboarding: Primarily using fingers for typing.
  • Talking: Expressing or communicating verbally through use of spoken words (accurately conveying detailed or important spoken instructions to others).
  • Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound.
  • Visual: Through close visual acuity, required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading (with or without correction).
  • Environment: Because the requirements of this position require frequent, often informal collaboration with other Railinc colleagues and external stakeholders, and to maximize the development of the skills and responsibilities essential for this position, Railinc expects that the work required of this role be performed predominantly in the office consistent with Railinc’s in-the-office work policies, as communicated by Human Resources and/or Senior Management. Any individual variations on in-the-office work policies will be reviewed by Human Resources on a case-by-case basis. As work is performed predominantly within an office setting, there is no substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions (i.e., extreme heat, cold, noise, etc.).
