Job Description

Controller

About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls for a growing distribution-focused organization. This role owns the close process, technical accounting, inventory and margin integrity, payroll oversight, and budgeting for the finance function, while partnering cross‑functionally to deliver accurate, timely, and compliant financials.

Why Jewett Cameron

With more than 70 years of operating history, Jewett Cameron is a publicly traded company with established brands across fencing, pet, outdoor, and select lumber products. The company is at a stage where execution discipline, margin integrity, and financial transparency matter more than adding process for its own sake.

This Controller role is a core leadership position with direct influence over profitability, cash flow, and decision‑quality. The Controller will strengthen the financial foundation of the business—owning close, controls, inventory and payroll integrity, and budgeting—while partnering closely with operations and leadership to support sustainable growth and improved margins.

What You’ll Do

  • Own monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close; deliver accurate financial statements and variance analysis
  • Lead technical accounting and GAAP compliance, including revenue recognition, inventory, leases, and income taxes
  • Design, maintain, and test internal controls in alignment with SOX/COSO
  • Oversee inventory costing, rebates, chargebacks, and gross margin analysis
  • Manage treasury, AR/AP oversight, and working capital optimization
  • Support external audits and SEC reporting (10‑Q / 10‑K support)
  • Own budgeting and reforecasting for the Accounting/Finance function and partner with FP&A on enterprise planning
  • Oversee end‑to‑end payroll operations, compliance, and controls in partnership with HR
  • Lead and develop the accounting team and serve as a trusted business partner across the organization

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA strongly preferred
  • 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience; public accounting or public company experience a plus
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and internal controls
  • Experience with ERP/WMS environments (Aptean Apprise, SPS Commerce preferred)
  • Proven ability to lead teams, improve processes, and partner cross‑functionally

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, FSA, and HSA
  • Generous 401(k) match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Opportunity to make a real difference in a small public company
