Description

The Department of Conservation’s CalGEM Central District is seeking to hire eleven Student Assistants to support a wide range of data and administrative tasks that help maintain and improve our oil and gas program records. Students will assist with organizing, scanning, reviewing, and archiving well files, logs, maps, and other documents; entering and updating data in various databases; helping reduce backlogs in project reviews; conducting basic research to support engineering and geologic staff; compiling information for reports and mapping projects; and assisting with general office support as needed.

Some assignments may involve working with historical well records, reviewing application materials for completeness, preparing data for technical evaluations, or helping organize geologic and water quality information. Duties will vary depending on team assignment, but all positions involve hands-on experience with data management, document processing, and supporting technical staff in a professional regulatory environment.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

 

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript). Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule

 

Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 7 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. 

 

Additional Work Schedule

 

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per workweek (Monday – Friday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

 

 

Compensation

 

$16.90 per hour

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Competent in using Microsoft Office 365 Software (Words, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, etc.).
  • Must exercise good judgment and use a high degree of initiative and discretion. 
  • Be able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Must be able to perform technical duties accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Must be able to work in CalGEM’s Bakersfield office.
  • Some employees in this role may be required to drive; those assigned to operate a vehicle must have a valid California driver’s license. 

 

 Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Previous experience in an administrative role.
  • Familiarity with standard office practices, procedures, and equipment including but not limited to scanners, computers, and filing. 
  • Advanced skills or experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Student Assistants will support a wide range of data, administrative, and technical tasks that help maintain and improve CalGEM’s oil and gas program records.
  • Duties include organizing, scanning, reviewing, and archiving well files, logs, maps, and other documents.
  • Entering and updating information in databases and tracking systems. 
  • Assisting with backlog reduction for project reviews; conducting basic research to support engineering and geologic staff; compiling information for reports and mapping projects.
  • Preparing documents for scanning and storage; retrieving and re-filing well records. 
  • Performing quality control on scanned images.
  • Assisting with general office support as needed.
  • Some assignments may involve working with historical well records, reviewing application materials for completeness, preparing data for technical evaluations, or helping organize geologic and water quality information.
  • All duties will be performed under the direction of CalGEM staff and may vary depending on team assignment.

 

 

Physical Requirements

 

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation. Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds. Reaching (above and below shoulder level). Bend (neck and waist), squat, kneel, and twist (neck and waist).
