Front-End Software Engineering & UI/UX Intern
Arlington, Virginia
The Opportunity:
We are seeking a motivated intern to help design and build a modern, cloud-enabled web front end for a cross-platform Geospatial Artificial Intelligence application used across desktop, mobile, and future app environments. This role blends front-end development, UI/UX design, accessibility, and secure system design into a real-world engineering project. You will contribute directly to a production-facing interface that supports file uploads, dynamic user inputs, and API-driven request workflows. The goal is to deliver a fully functional, consistent, and accessible front end by the end of the internship in 2026.
Our Technology:
Safran Federal System’s GeoAI business develops artificial intelligence software solutions in support of aerospace, defense, homeland security, police actions, and more. Our AI-based geospatial intelligence solutions are a set of pre-trained AI algorithms for the automatic detection, classification and identification of objects of interest, enabling analysts to understand complex situations. These solutions are optimized for use with space and airborne based electro-optical (EO), synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and full motion video (FMV) data. Safran Federal Systems is authorized to work on the full spectrum of U.S. Government classified and unclassified projects, in addition to supporting strategic partnerships for key geospatial technologies.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and design responsive web interfaces
Build user-facing components that adapt across desktop, tablet, and mobile form factors while maintaining a consistent and intuitive user experience. - Create cross-platform user experiences
Support design and implementation of interfaces that function seamlessly across cloud-hosted, standalone, and future mobile application environments. - Implement file upload and API-driven workflows
Design and integrate front-end functionality that allows users to upload files, select options, and submit structured requests to backend APIs. - Support UI/UX design and branding consistency
Work within defined visual and branding guidelines to produce polished, professional interfaces with a consistent look and feel across all screens. - Apply accessibility best practices (assistive technology-aware design)
Ensure interfaces are usable with screen readers and other assistive technologies, following accessibility standards such as WCAG principles where applicable. - Participate in tool and framework selection
- Contribute to early project decisions regarding programming languages, front-end frameworks, and development tools that will be used throughout the project lifecycle.
What You’ll Learn:
- Modern front-end development and UI/UX design
- Gain hands-on experience building real applications using current web technologies and design workflows used in industry.
- Cloud-connected application architecture
- Understand how front-end systems interact with cloud-hosted services and backend APIs in scalable deployment environments.
- Accessibility and inclusive design principles
- Learn how to design interfaces that are usable by individuals with a wide range of abilities and assistive technologies.
- Secure design concepts including Zero Trust fundamentals
- Gain exposure to modern security approaches, including how trust boundaries and authentication models impact front-end design.
- Real-world API integration and system workflows
- Work with structured data exchange between front-end interfaces and backend services through REST or similar API models.
What You Bring to Safran Federal Systems:
- Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field is required.
- Strong interest in front-end development, UI/UX design, or digital product design is required.
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (or similar web technologies).
- Understanding of visual design principles such as layout, spacing, color, and typography.
- Interest in building accessible, user-centered, and secure digital experiences
- Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue is preferred.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or similar environments is preferred.
- Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch is preferred.
- Basic understanding of REST APIs or JSON-based data exchange is preferred.
- Awareness of accessibility standards such as WCAG or ARIA practices is preferred.

Safran Federal Systems has been awarded as a
Winner of the USA Today and Rochester Metro Area Top Workplaces 2025 Award.
In 2022, Safran acquired Orolia, now Safran Trusted 4D, the world leader in Resilient PNT. At the intersection of critical infrastructure and national defense, Safran Trusted 4D solutions govern and protect the integrity of systems that shape the world. In early 2019, Orolia Defense & Security spun off as a separate entity from its parent company Orolia, with the mission of providing resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) solutions and custom engineering services to U.S. Government agencies, U.S. Defense organizations, and their contractors.
In August of 2019, Orolia Defense & Security acquired Talen-X, a U.S. company specializing in advanced GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Simulation solutions and Interference, Detection, and Mitigation (IDM) technologies. Talen-X's portfolio was an ideal fit and has helped to enhance Safran FS's overall offerings. The acquisition enabled Talen-X's existing resources, operations, and capabilities to be
scaled and accelerated to better support the warfighter. Read the press release
