Job Title: Supervisor of Student Services and Alternative Instruction


Salary Index: Supervisor Pay Band, 12-month term


Reports To: Executive Director


Location:    Abrams Academy and Division


FLSA Status: Exempt


 


SUMMARY: The Supervisor of Student Services and Alternative Education is a dynamic and visionary leader responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of student services within Fluvanna County Public Schools. This position ensures the creation of an inclusive, best-practice model that meets the diverse needs of all students while adhering to relevant laws, codes, and regulations. The Supervisor evaluates personnel, provides guidance and support to administrative and professional staff, and collaborates with key stakeholders to achieve the district’s instructional goals. By leading the planning and execution of student services programs, the Supervisor plays a crucial role in fulfilling the district’s mission, vision, compliance, and regulations, fostering a supportive and effective learning environment for every student. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.



  • Serve as a member of the Central Office Leadership Team, providing leadership, guidance, and feedback on the division priorities and work, especially regarding Student Services. 

  • Supervise, monitor, and maintain complete and accurate records to ensure compliance as required by law, division, policy, and administrative procedures; complete assigned and related state reports.

  • Attend and prepare for various scheduled meetings, including those with the Superintendent, Central Office Leadership Team, School Board, and other stakeholders, providing necessary reports, responses, presentations, and recommendations. 

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws. 

  • Assists Principals, the Directors of Instruction and Special Education, the Behavior Specialist, and the Coordinator of Mental Health with planning and implementing effective alternative school-based student services programs by addressing building needs and creating processes and procedures that most effectively support student interventions and help staff implement best practices. 

  • Establishes and monitors procedures for the screening, placement, evaluation, and assignment of students to the division's alternative educational programs. 

  • Liaison for Homebound, Home School, and Home-based services for the division, conducting interviews and providing recommendations for appropriate instructional services.

  • Manages and oversees the daily operations of Abrams Academy and Alternative Instruction, including but not limited to Distance Learning.

  • Coordinates and manages the Project RETURN grant to assist school divisions in addressing the educational, social, and emotional needs of students who require an alternative educational program. 

  • Assess staffing needs in cooperation with the Central Office Leadership Team, evaluate personnel, and assist in the determination of goals to improve performance.

  • Facilitates a collaborative approach to support student success through programs and services. involving family and community engagement.

  • Attends discipline reviews and hearings and is the designee for discipline appeals, reviews, and hearings.

  • Attend a variety of meetings to maintain current knowledge of legislation, legal codes, and requirements; review changes in Student Services; attend workshops and meetings with division, County, and State personnel; and conduct and facilitate meetings.

  • Assists in the establishment of goals and objectives for district-aligned Student Services by using systems data to lead the improvement of the district to positively impact students and staff.

  • Develops, identifies, recommends, and implements Student Services policies, changes, and FCPS annual plan, needed to comply with changes in federal and state statutes. 

  • Develops and coordinates division and school safety audits/teams

  • Develops, updates, and prepares Crisis Management Plan, and Critical Incident training and resources for the division in coordination with building and division-level staff.

  • Develops, updates, and prepares annual Parent Resource Guide and Student Code of Conduct in coordination with mandates, policies, and codes.

  • Review, analyze, and communicate data to assist with the completion of reports for VDOE. 

  • Perform other duties that the superintendent, or designee, may assign. 


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; interview and select employees and recommend transfers, reassignment, termination, and disciplinary actions; plan, coordinate, and arrange for appropriate training of subordinates. 


QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must hold a valid teaching license with an endorsement in administration and supervision, PK-12, and five to ten years related experience and/or training preferred.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 


TECHNICAL SKILLS: Ability to use financial reporting software, be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Google Suite products, including Google Sheets and Google Docs.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must hold a valid teaching license with an endorsement in administration and supervision, PK-12, and five to ten years of related experience and/or training preferred.
