Position Summary |
The Office of Institutional Analytics seeks a motivated Professional Intern to gain hands-on experience in data-informed decision-making, digital content review, and community engagement initiatives. This internship is designed to provide recent graduates with meaningful, structured, on-the-job training through a variety of projects and professional development opportunities. The intern will receive mentorship and guidance while building skills aligned with careers in data analytics, higher education administration, and project coordination. This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months. Key Responsibilities Under the supervision of professional staff, the intern will contribute to a range of projects and operational activities, including: - Digital Content Review & Compliance Support
Conduct a comprehensive review of publicly available dashboards (e.g., Tableau) and related web content to assess alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG), accuracy, and institutional standards. Compile findings into a structured “action list” identifying areas for improvement. Note: The intern will primarily focus on identifying and documenting items, with opportunities to implement fixes if they feel comfortable and/or under the guidance of a team member. - Data Community & Data Literacy Initiatives
Support the coordination and ongoing engagement of a university-wide data community of practice by:- Sending reminders for scheduled sessions and events
- Posting agendas, recordings, and resources to the online resource page
- Drafting and sharing discussion prompts to encourage participation in collaboration platforms (e.g., Teams)
- Assisting with event logistics, including scheduling, coordination of locations, and communication support for any in-person events
- Meeting Support & Follow-Up
Attend select meetings with leadership (including the Director) and provide structured follow-up, including meeting notes, task lists, and tracking of next steps to support project momentum and accountability - Professional Development & Experiential Learning
This internship includes a robust, hands-on learning experience designed to prepare the intern for a professional role in institutional research and analytics. Opportunities include:- On-the-job training in programming and data tools such as R, SAS, SQL, and occasional exposure to Python
- First-hand experience working with data visualization and business intelligence tools, including Tableau and Power BI
- Exposure to the roles and responsibilities of an Institutional Research (IR) office at a large R1 university, with multiple campuses, including reporting and compliance work (e.g., IPEDS, NMHED, PDP)
- Opportunities to attend and/or support local and regional conferences and professional development events (e.g., NMHEAR, NMHED Summit, UNM Tech Days, Appalachian State Analytics Day, and others based on interest and availability)
- Shadowing and collaboration opportunities with the team’s Director, Data Scientist II, and other senior staff to observe and learn how research projects are designed, conducted, and communicated
- Participation as an active member of the Office of Institutional Analytics team, contributing to projects, discussions, and a collaborative work environment
- General Responsibilities
- Participate in planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives
- Engage with internal stakeholders to support day-to-day operations and problem-solving
- Conduct research and prepare summaries or reports with recommendations, as appropriate
- Receive ongoing mentorship, training, and feedback from professional staff
- Perform additional related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications |
Must be currently enrolled at an accredited university in a Bachelor's or higher level degree program, and are within 12 months from graduating OR a recent graduate of an accredited university with a Bachelor's or higher level degree obtained no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire; no previous experience required. |

Preferred Qualifications - Interest in data analytics, higher education, or organizational effectiveness
- Familiarity with tools such as Tableau, Excel, or collaboration platforms (e.g., Teams)
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Basic project planning and organizational skills
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Attention to detail, particularly in reviewing and documenting findings
