Salary/Benefits: Starting rate $18.00 (van) $20.00 (bus); benefit package available
Available: Full-time, School Year Position
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Summary:
The Van/Bus Driver provides safe and reliable transportation for students of the Intermediate School District (ISD)
to and from schools, programs, and approved activities. This position operates school vehicles in compliance with
state and federal regulations, district policies, and established safety procedures. The driver ensures the well-being
of all passengers, maintains appropriate student conduct on the vehicle, performs required pre- and post-trip
inspections, and communicates effectively with staff, parents, and administrators.
Qualifications:
● Valid Michigan chauffeur's license.
● Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination provided by a licensed medical
doctor.
● Must comply with the State of Michigan's mandatory drug and alcohol testing requirements.
● Currently hold or willing to obtain a Michigan CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with a school bus (S)
endorsement.
● Criminal Background Check
Essential Duties:
● Safely transport special education students to and from school and scheduled activities while maintaining a
high standard of care.
● Follow all traffic regulations, safety protocols, and vehicle route schedules.
● Conduct pre-route safety inspections of the vehicle, including checking fluid levels, tire conditions, mirrors,
and other essential components.
● Assist students boarding and disembarking the vehicle, including those who require special assistance
(e.g., wheelchairs, walkers), ensuring their safety at all times.
● Ensure the release of students only at authorized stops.
● Maintain a safe, supportive, and orderly environment on the vehicle, implementing student behavior
management strategies as needed.

● Monitor and respond appropriately to student needs, including those with physical, emotional, or behavioral
challenges.
● Communicate effectively with school personnel, parents, and caregivers regarding student transportation
needs.
● Assist teachers, support personnel, and aides when on out-of district school trips or as assigned.
● Ensure the vehicle is clean and properly maintained, reporting any mechanical issues to the Director of
Transportation and Operations or designee.
● Complete necessary logs, reports, and documentation related to student transportation.
● Respond to emergencies following school district protocols and ensure the well-being of students during
transportation.
● Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain a positive rapport with students, parents, and school
staff.
● Ability to effectively intervene on behaviors for students assigned to the route, including those with
emotional and behavioral challenges.
● Attend training sessions and meetings as required by the district.
● Regular in-person attendance is required for this position when scheduled.

Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger,
handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; smell, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee is frequently required to sit and stoop for extended periods of time. The employee must occasionally
lift and/or move up to 75 pounds such as wheelchairs and students. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, distant vision and the ability to adjust focus.
The noise level in the work environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day.
The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible
for the safety and well-being of students.
