Job Description

Safety/Quality Coordinator

Metals USA is seeking a Safety/Quality Coordinator in Fairless Hills, PA. Metals USA is a solid, growth oriented, carbon steel (plate, beam and tube) distribution center servicing the defense, commercial, construction, aerospace and fabrication industries.

The Safety/Quality Coordinator Provides quality control and safety oversight to ensure products and facility operations meet all production, quality, and regulatory standards. Conducts inspections, testing, and measurements of materials and finished goods to verify compliance with specifications and quality requirements, while recommending improvements to assembly and production processes. Monitors working conditions across the entire facility--including warehouse, office areas, external property, and parking lots--to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations. Enforces company health and safety guidelines, performs workplace and product safety inspections, and delivers employee safety training to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs accurate mechanical and physical inspections of in-coming material, in-process parts and finished products
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and customer specifications.
  • Uses testing equipment including calipers, micrometers and indicators for inspection.
  • Approves in-process production by confirming specifications; approves finished products.
  • Reports and tracks any deviations from quality standards and recommends corrective action to appropriate personnel and upper management.
  • Documents inspection logs, reports, and customer records with inspection findings and results.
  • Communicates with customer, vendors and production personnel regarding quality issues
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Notifies management of product discrepancies.
  • Adheres to established company policies and procedures paying special attention to safety regulations.
  • Adheres to Reliance Steel and Aluminum's Code of Conduct as well as customer confidentiality requirements.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required to perform the duties of a quality control inspector.
  • Wears personal protective equipment in accordance with training guidelines.
  • Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe manner.
  • Facilitates compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) guidelines. Implements OSH policies and develops programs to ensure enforcement of OSH policies.
  • Trains employees in all safety procedures and ensures daily adherence with procedures. Leads and manages the required daily, weekly and monthly trainings.
  • Designs methods for appraising safety conditions in the warehouse and office.
  • Inspects working conditions and equipment to ensure all products and activities are compliant with safety guidelines as required by OSH and RSAC. Recalls defective and unsafe products and machinery.
  • Directs accident investigation procedures, investigates safety violation, determines root causes maintains records of safety-related incidents and proposes corrective actions.
  • Collaborates with managers to monitor compliance and safety issues; intervenes in unsafe activities and operations.
  • Oversees the use of dangerous chemicals and machinery and determines potential safety risk.
  • Conducts risk assessments and enforces preventative measures.
  • Coordinates with HR to set-up a new employee on-boarding safety process.
  • Oversees workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employees' safety.
  • Suggests revisions to production schedules and employee activity that does not meet health and safety codes.
  • Orders safety gear and supplies for the workplace.
  • Facilitates emergency drills as required to gauge employee readiness.
  • Consults with management regarding the implementation of new safety procedures as mandated by company, local, state and federal agencies.
  • Assists HR with the workers compensation claim investigation and management.
  • Assists HR and legal departments to address any health and safety related lawsuits.
  • Complies with company and OSHA safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Liaises with and reports to official regulatory bodies on OSH matters.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required to perform the duties of a safety coordinator as this is hands-on position.
  • Adheres to Reliance Steel and Aluminum's Code of Conduct as well as customer confidentiality requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Certifications/Licenses:
  • Current valid driver's license in good standing
  • Current and valid OSHA forklift certificate
  • Current and valid overhead crane certificate

Physical Demands:

Occupation requires being sedentary less than or equal to 75% of the time (< to 6 hours per day).

  • Stand, walk, sit, hearing, talking, use of hands and fingers, hand-eye coordination, reach outward, reach above shoulder, climb, squat or kneel or bend
  • Regularly required to work on multiple concurrent tasks with constant interruptions
  • Occasionally drives a vehicle to visit customers
  • Lift, carry, push and/or pull 51 -- 100 lbs. with assistance
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limb coordination
  • Time will be spent on the job-site floor monitoring & inspecting conditions
  • Job Site may be hazardous or pose serious threat in emergency situations

Must wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Hard hats with chin straps; chin straps must be worn at all times when on elevated surface
