Varsity Brands is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Manager of Tax to support all aspects of direct tax compliance, provision, and reporting for a complex C-corporation currently backed by private equity and preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) in the near future. This role will also support partnership tax reporting, including K-1 oversight, and assist with legal entity compliance across jurisdictions.

This position will work closely with external tax advisors, internal accounting and finance teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant tax reporting.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Tax Compliance & Provision Support

  • Coordinate with external tax advisors on the preparation of U.S. federal and multi-state income tax returns.
  • Gather, organize, and validate financial and tax data needed for compliance and provision processes.
  • Perform detailed reconciliations between book (GAAP) and tax data, identifying and explaining differences.
  • Support the ASC 740 tax provision process, including assisting with data collection, analysis, and documentation.

Review & Advisor Management

  • Serve as the primary internal reviewer of work prepared by external tax partners, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with company records.
  • Review tax returns, provision calculations, and supporting workpapers in detail.
  • Manage timelines, deliverables, and communication with external advisors.

Tax Payments & Notices

  • Prepare and process federal, state, and local tax payments, including estimates and extensions.
  • Monitor tax accounts and ensure timely and accurate payment execution.
  • Respond to and manage tax notices and correspondence from tax authorities, coordinating with external advisors as needed.

Partnership & K-1 Oversight

  • Assist in the coordination and review of Schedule K-1s related to partnership investments or structures.
  • Support data collection and communication with external providers for partnership tax reporting.

Legal Entity & Compliance Support

  • Assist with legal entity structure tracking and simplification initiatives in preparation for IPO.
  • Support corporate registrations and business license renewals across state and local jurisdictions.
  • Maintain organized records of entity-level compliance requirements and filings.

IPO Readiness & Process Improvement

  • Support tax-related aspects of IPO readiness, including documentation and process enhancement.
  • Assist in building and documenting tax processes and controls aligned with SOX requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of tax processes.

Audit & Controversy Support

  • Assist with responses to federal, state, and local tax audits and inquiries.
  • Gather documentation and coordinate with external advisors on audit support.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES

  • Experience with:
    • Federal and state income tax compliance for C-corporations
    • ASC 740 tax provision support
    • Book-to-tax reconciliations
    • Working with external tax advisors
  • Exposure to partnership taxation and K-1 reporting is a plus.
  • Familiarity with multi-entity and multi-state compliance, including registrations and licenses, is preferred.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed or IPO-bound company is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Proactive and solution-oriented mindset
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or Master’s in Taxation preferred.
  • 5–8+ years of relevant tax experience, ideally a mix of public accounting and/or corporate tax.
