Temporary Position WAGE RANGE: $18.00-$21.00 /Hourly
The Bay Center Broodstock Oyster Technician position will assist in caring for the oyster broodstock for commercial (ready to be used by the hatcheries) and research (Taylor Genetic Improvement Program) purposes. Learn and provide proper husbandry for the broodstock from seed to adults and help with supplying the hatcheries with broodstock for spawning. A crewmember is responsible for the equipment assigned to them, and be able to work day or night tides in all types of weather conditions. This means the crewmembers must wear appropriate protective clothing. Oyster crews are to report to their crew boss and/or manager for hours, places, and transportation. Oyster crews are often assigned to other tasks such as harvesting with other crews and must be open and available to work this position as well.
This position includes the following responsibilities: (these responsibilities will be much more detailed in our SOPs)
- Provide husbandry for the commercial broodstock - Following appropriate oyster growing techniques to insure optimal growth and survival.
- Provide assistance and labor during the major phases of the TGIP program - Bulk seed deployment in June-July, Test experiment replication in Sept-Oct, and Seed performance assessment in August (these dates are subject to change).
- Organize and take care of equipment off tide (cleaning of bags, tags, tools, boat equipment, etc.)
- Learn how to operate boom for lowing and raising gear from dock/boat.
- Communicate regularly with crew boss. This includes any issues on the farms or off tide.
- Be willing to assist other crews for harvesting.
Nursery – provide assistance during setting season.
- Assist with daily husbandry routines - Feeding, water exchange, monitoring of spat, monitoring of water quality, cleaning tanks, making of bags, loading and unloading
