Reports to: Pharmacy Director
- Purpose and Scope of Position
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Technician supports medication distribution for inpatient, emergency, and outpatient services. This includes managing automated dispensing systems, assisting with telepharmacy operation, and other functions such as compounding in a manner consistent with laws and policies & procedures to ensure 24/7 medication access.

This position reports to the Pharmacy Director. This position may provide additional support to other departments as requested. This position may provide support to the public, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
- Duties and Responsibilities
- Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities

- Medication Distribution: Accurately fill, label, and deliver patient-specific medication orders to nursing units, emergency department and clinic.
- Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs): Replenish and maintain inventory levels in hospital ADCs (e.g., Omnicell).
- Inventory & Shortage Management: Order and restock pharmaceuticals, track drug shortages, and perform monthly inspections to remove expired medications.
- Sterile Compounding: Prepare intravenous (IV) medications, including antibiotics, following strict aseptic techniques and USP standards.
- Medication Assistance Program: Upon provider referral, provide support for patients in need of medication assistance.
- Medication Reconciliation: Interview patients or family members to obtain accurate home medication histories within 24 hours of admission.
- Compliance & Safety: Maintain perpetual inventory for controlled substances and assist in 340B drug program audits for hospital compliance.
- Knowledge Of / Skills / Abilities / Complexities and Difficulties
- Experience with hospital Electronic Health Records (EHR) and telepharmacy technology.
- Experience with wholesaler ordering (e.g., Cardinal, McKesson)
- Familiarity with automated dispensing devices (e.g., Omnicell, Pyxis)
- Advanced training in sterile compounding or chemotherapy preparation.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with rural healthcare teams (doctors, nurses, and laboratory staff).
- Medication Reconciliation training and experience.

- Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED.
- Active licensure with the Montana Board of Pharmacy is mandatory. New hires may obtain a Provisional Certified Pharmacy Technician license (formerly "Technician-in-Training"), which is valid for 12 months while seeking full certification.
- Preferred Qualifications
- National Certification: Candidates with current national certification from the PTCB (CPhT) or NHA (ExCPT) will be highly preferred. Non-certified candidates may be considered with an expectation for fulfillment of certification prior to the expiration date of their provisional license.
