    Ames CSD is seeking a Benefits Specialist.


    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30; 255 work day position (year-round)

    Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

    • Oversees administration of employee benefit programs and serves as the primary point of contact for benefits-related inquiries. Assists employees with claims and coordinates with insurance carriers to resolve issues.
    • Manages claims for long-term disability, life, and paid-up life insurance.
    • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records in the benefits administration system, including enrollments, changes, and terminations. Manages the annual open enrollment process and supports insurance renewals.
    • Prepares benefit communications and guides, and counsels employees on benefit options. Administers COBRA, ensuring compliance with all notification and election requirements. Monitors retiree participation and processes premium payments for retirees and COBRA participants.
    • Processes and codes insurance invoices, prepares required reports (including GASB 75), and coordinates responses to census data requests.
    • Coordinates wellness initiatives such as annual flu shot clinics and maintains Employee Assistance Programs. May also be a member of District wellness committees.
    • Supports HR and Business Office operations, including customer service, benefits-related transactions, payroll deductions, and eligibility inquiries. Assists with liability insurance billing and deposits, and supports vehicle insurance and recordkeeping.
    • Provides backup support for Workers' Compensation and FMLA administration.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in business or a related field, or equivalent experience, preferred.

    The successful candidate will exhibit:

    • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders.
    • Demonstrated discretion in handling confidential information and a high standard of integrity and ethical conduct.
    • Organization with strong attention to detail; able to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Vista Iowa School Business Software, and insurance-related platforms; capable of maintaining accurate records and managing electronic files.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work independently with minimal supervision, and exercise sound judgment.
    • Committed to providing high-quality service and contributing to a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.Reliable and punctual with consistent attendance.

    Compensation: $25.30 per hour
