    Monroe Public Schools Position Description

    Position Title: 10-Month Assistant Principal: Elementary 

    Reports To: Principal 

    SUMMARY: The Assistant Principal supports the Principal in fostering a collaborative, student-centered community that promotes the academic, social, and emotional development of each child. This role blends instructional leadership, school operations, and relationship-building to maintain a positive, safe, and productive learning environment.

    Working within a distributive leadership model, the Assistant Principal partners with the Principal to strengthen instructional practices, enhance student support systems, and ensure effective day-to-day operations in service of improved outcomes for both students and staff.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. 


    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Instructional Leadership & Teacher Development

    • Lead continuous improvement of curriculum, instruction, and assessment through data-informed decision-making
    • Conduct classroom walkthroughs, observations, and evaluations, providing timely, actionable feedback
    • Advance teacher practice through coaching, collaboration, and implementation of high-quality instruction

    School Climate, Student Support & Behavior

    • Establish and maintain fair, consistent, and proactive school-wide behavior systems
    • Maintain a strong presence across classrooms and school settings to build student relationships
    • Guide staff in addressing student behaviors while fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment

    Special Education & Student Services

    • Facilitate PPTs, staffings, and parent meetings as assigned
    • Ensure compliance with special education processes, including IEPs, documentation, and timelines
    • Partner with staff, families, and service providers to meet student needs

    Support for Multilingual Learners (MLL)

    • Ensure programming provides access to instruction for multilingual learners
    • Work with staff to implement appropriate supports and inclusive practices
    • Promote equitable opportunities that address linguistic and academic needs

    Staff Support & Collaboration

    • Serve as a trusted and accessible resource for staff
    • Partner with teachers to address instructional practices, student needs, and classroom challenges
    • Contribute to hiring, onboarding, mentorship, and a collaborative school culture
    • Foster a collaborative culture that values staff voice, shared problem-solving, and ground-up leadership

    Family & Community Engagement

    • Build and maintain respectful, productive relationships with families
    • Communicate clearly and consistently regarding student progress and school matters
    • Participate in conferences, PPTs, 504 meetings, and school events

    Operations, Organization & School Management

    • Oversee daily school operations to ensure efficient and effective systems
    • Coordinate scheduling, supervision, and school routines, including arrival and dismissal
    • Manage standardized testing, resources, and operational logistics

    Planning, Communication & Compliance

    • Contribute to the development and implementation of school goals aligned to district priorities
    • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders in both written and oral formats
    • Ensure adherence to Board policies, state regulations, and educational practices

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
    Certified and non-certified staff as assigned by the principal 

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Connecticut Intermediate Administrator Certification (092) and advanced degree in Educational Leadership
    • Minimum of 5 years successful elementary teaching and/or administrative experience
    • Demonstrated leadership with strong communication and relationship-building skills
    • Highly organized, solution-oriented decision-maker
    • Strong knowledge of student behavior systems, special education, multilingual learners, and teacher evaluation

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. 

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
    Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
