Position Summary

The System Engineer and Applications Intern reports to the IT Applications team and supports initiatives related to AI tooling, application development, system integrations, and technical documentation. The role contributes to the build, maintenance, and optimization of systems and workflows that support clinical and business operations. Work performed is project-based and designed to deliver sustainable value beyond the internship period.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities of the System Engineer and Application Intern include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and document AI-powered workflows, including prompt engineering and PHI-safe implementation patterns.
  • Maintain and enhance internal web applications (HTML, JavaScript, CSS), including bug fixes, user interface improvements, and functional optimizations.
  • Partner with Applications and Data teams to convert undocumented knowledge into structured runbooks and workflow guides.
  • Document staff workflows within NextGen EHR and custom systems to support training, onboarding, and system optimization.
  • Provide Tier 1 support for NextGen EHR upgrade activities, including triage and first-call resolution where appropriate.
  • Support build and testing of system interfaces, including use of HL7 messaging and APIs.
  • Review, annotate, and assist in transitioning legacy code as part of application ownership handoff.

Education/Experience

  • Currently pursuing a BA/BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Rising junior or senior standing preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and Python (or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with FHIR APIs, HL7, and JSON.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to produce clear, structured documentation.
  • Motivated self-starter; can take initiative and execute independently with light direction.
  • Interest in healthcare IT, AI/LLMs, and systems integration.
  • Exposure to prompt engineering concepts preferred.
