Job Description

The Episcopal Academy seeks an exceptional Head Girls' Cross Country Coach to lead and elevate one of our premier Upper School programs. This is a high-impact leadership role for a coach who values competitive excellence, long-term athlete development, and education-based athletics.

The Head Coach will oversee all aspects of the Upper School Girls' Cross Country program (Varsity and developmental levels), ensuring a positive, demanding, and inclusive experience for all student-athletes. The successful candidate will have a track record of success as a program builder who develops young women both on and off the course and aligns fully with EA's mission and values.

About You

You are a proven program leader with a competitive mindset who understands that strong relationships, clear standards, and daily habits drive successful distance running programs. You can build and sustain a cross country program focused on development, consistency, and team culture-mentoring assistant coaches, supporting multi-sport athletes, and creating alignment from Middle School through Varsity.

You value multi-sport participation, communicate with clarity and purpose, and foster a culture centered on growth, resilience, accountability, and competitive excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all Upper School Girls' Cross Country teams
  • Design and implement effective, developmentally appropriate training plans that emphasize long-term athlete growth
  • Hire, develop, and lead a high-quality coaching staff
  • Recruit, retain, and develop student-athletes within an independent school setting
  • Supervise meets, travel, and program logistics
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the rules and best practices governing cross country
  • Support and help grow Middle School and Lower School cross country and distance-running programming
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with student-athletes, families, and school partners
  • Work closely with strength and conditioning coaches and athletic trainers to ensure student-athletes are healthy, prepared, and able to perform at their highest levels
  • Report meet results and relevant statistics to local media and school partners
  • Collaborate with other varsity coaches to support multi-sport athletes and avoid seasonal conflicts
  • Oversee a mission-aligned social media presence that promotes the program and celebrates student-athletes
  • Be a visible, active member of the school community who supports EA's mission and values

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Competitive running background and/or collegiate playing experience preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of varsity-level coaching experience (or higher)
  • Evening, weekend, and travel commitments required

The Episcopal Academy seeks candidates who hope to help foster a school environment where all people are valued and where all perspectives are respected and appreciated, as described in our Diversity and Inclusion statement.
