JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Night Custodian
REPORTS TO: Building Supervisor, Principal, and Maintenance Coordinator
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: General knowledge of basic cleaning, repair and maintenance of a school
building
CLASSIFICATION: Classified
WORK YEAR: 12 months
WORK DAY: 8 hours (2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Occasional shift hours to be flexible based on need as decided
by the Building Supervisor.)
SALARY: Per Contract Schedule
EVALUATOR: Building Supervisor and/or Principal
BASIC FUNCTION
To maintain the assigned school building and grounds in a condition of operating excellence and safety so that
full educational use of all facilities may be made at all times
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
1. Basic cleaning methods, procedures and techniques
2. Basic repair and maintenance procedures and techniques
3. Cleaning materials, supplies and equipment
4. Safe working methods and procedures
Ability to:
1. Efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies and equipment
2. Understand and carry out oral and written directions
3. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
4. Perform simple and repetitive tasks
5. Work independently
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cleaning Duties:
1. Sweep, mop, strip, wax and seal floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets
2. Dust, wash and polish furniture and woodwork
3. Empty and clean waste receptacles
4. Clean restrooms, locker rooms and showers
5. Wash windows and walls, polish metal work, clean chalk boards and white boards
6. Clean window coverings such as drapes and blinds
7. Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walk areas and the areas adjacent to school
facilities
8. Sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to the school buildings
9. Perform emergency cleanup service resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling and illness
10. General cleaning of classrooms, hallways, kitchen/cafeteria areas, gym area, teacher work areas and
office areas
11. Perform related duties as assigned
Maintenance Responsibilities:
1. Inspect the building each day for damage. Areas to be inspected include playground equipment,
fencing, building exterior, building interior. Any damages must be reported to the building principal or
the Director of Maintenance.

2. Perform minimum yard work by pulling weeds in flower beds and raking leaves
3. Maintain all areas of the building so that they are safe and free of hazards or debris
4. Remove snow and ice from areas where safety is an issue
5. Inspect any vehicles or mechanical equipment the custodian uses in the performance of his duties
6. Repair and fix broken desks and chairs
7. Work with supervisors to develop and maintain a program of safe conditions and practices to provide for
the welfare of the students, staff and visitors to the building
8. Look for ways to improve the physical structure and initiate procedures to accomplish these
improvements
9. Perform minor maintenance work as assigned
General Duties:
1. Be the first call in the event of any building related problem
2. Attend District meetings and communicate effectively with the Central Office Staff, Maintenance
Department, Administration and Staff of his assigned school, and the general public
3. Enjoy, welcome and initiate positive contact with students, teachers, staff members and visitors at the
assigned school
4. Be on site and on duty during all school lunch/breakfast times and assist with bus duty when directed by
the Principal
5. Be on site and available to deal with any unexpected situation or event requiring attention. The school
secretary or Principal must be notified when the custodian is leaving the building and when he/she
expects to return.
6. Be available on call and on site by pager during the entire shift or assignment time
7. Maintain an inventory and recommend purchase of suitable supplies, tools, and equipment
8. Lock and secure the assigned building when leaving
9. Inspect District property and observe activities on District property for unsafe conditions which may
lead to injury; correct any unsafe practices and conditions and to report all other potential safety hazards
to their supervisors.
10. Work with supervisors to develop and maintain a program of safe conditions and practices for the
welfare of the students, faculty, employees, volunteers, visitors and other invitees.
11. Follow the safety guidelines specified in the Safety and Risk Management Plan for Quincy Public
School District #172
12. Inspect office areas and equipment to ensure that any hazards are removed or reported
13. Perform all other duties necessary to the position and such other duties as may be
14. assigned by the principal
DUTIES SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION: Bleacher set up, gym clean up, weekend
work, overtime, heavy lifting, snow removal
OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED TO THIS POSITION. THE ABOVE LISTING OF DUTIES IS A
PARTIAL LISTING OF ASSIGNMENTS AT THIS TIME AND DOES NOT LIMIT THE ASSIGNED
DUTIES OF THIS POSITION. PERIODICALLY THERE WILL NEED TO BE ALTERATIONS TO YOUR
WORK AS NECESSARY--KEEP IN MIND CHANGES WILL OCCUR ON AN “AS NEEDED” BASIS TO
GET THE WORK DONE.
