Reference Number: 53515:  2027 Emergency Medicine Registrar
Employment Type: Fixed Term Full Time (FT)
Location: Northern Health (All Campuses)

About Northern Health:

As an organisation we have a clear focus on how we service and partner with our community, including our strategy of helping the community stay well when at home. Our reputation of community minded, inclusive and progressive is matched to none.

Northern Health is located in the rapidly growing northern suburbs with projected growth the biggest in the state. With a booming, culturally rich and diverse community, and less than an hour’s drive from the CBD (still within the bounds of Myki and ride-sharing), Melbourne’s North is fast becoming the place to be.

Northern Health are seeking applications from motivated and suitably experienced Registrars to join the Emergency Department.

Northern Health is the major provider of acute, maternity, sub-acute, mental health, specialist, community and home-based services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing outer north.

Services are provided through our six main campuses:

Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn and Mernda Community Hospitals, and Kilmore District Hospital.  In addition, Mental Health Services are provided at Epping, Broadmeadows, Jacana, Preston, Mill Park, Mernda and Coburg.

About Us:

Fast-paced, flexible, friendly! The Emergency Department at Northern Health is a large, vibrant and supportive workplace accredited for two years of ACEM advanced training. We employ a diverse and driven group of doctors, nurses, allied health and clerical staff.

About the Role:

As an Emergency Registrar, you will experience and manage a wide range of interesting cases here at the Northern including complex medical, surgical, trauma and O+G cases.

You will have many opportunities to manage critically unwell patients and perform procedures such as intubation, arterial line and central line insertion under the supervision of our experienced and encouraging Emergency Physicians.

You will also become experienced in ED and SSU flow management.

Overall, you will develop incomparable leadership experience as you work towards becoming a FACEM.

We have a comprehensive Registrar Education Program at The Northern, which includes 5 hours of protected paid teaching time per week.

We have some of the best passing rates in Victoria in both our primary and fellowship examinations and our revision programs are taught by current ACEM examiners.

There is a comprehensive weekly education schedule, along with a range of subsidised courses and workshops.

We are a TS4 accredited training site with a coordinated and structured TS4 program encouraging participation in Leadership, Teaching and Quality activities within a challenging but supportive environment.

There are ample opportunities to be involved in Quality improvement projects which will integrate you within the department and be beneficial to your CV.

There is also ample opportunity to complete your non-ED requirements, with external rotations to:

  • ICU
  • Anaesthetics
  • RMH ED (for trauma)
  • O+G
  • Plastic surgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Paediatric ED

Our experienced DEMTs (Directors of Emergency Medicine Training) would be happy to talk with you and explain what we have to offer you depending on your personal circumstance.

There is a Simulation and Safety team on the ED floor, giving you the opportunity to develop your leadership and management skills.

It is also excellent practice for those studying for the Fellowship. Simulations run weekly and are accompanied with a de-brief and written review with recommendations.

We have a growing number of CCPU accredited consultants and a dynamic ED US committee, offering opportunity for credentialling and training in core and extended modalities.

In addition to regular ultrasound education, targeted sessions help trainees prepare for fellowship written examination.

We have a strong leadership and workforce structure, to look after your wellbeing and to ensure rosters are fair.

We value a strong culture of teamwork and adopt the principle that we are all part of a large work family who respect and support each other.

As such we encourage applications from doctors who are interested in part time positions to accommodate exam revision and family commitments etc.

We are only 30 minutes from Melbourne city and the northern corridor is an affordable and rapidly expanding area that many of our doctors live in and enjoy the plethora of dining and entertainment options.

Northern Health is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce which reflects the community we serve.

Applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged.

Next Steps . . .

Come join our vibrant collegiate ED family!
