About the Department

Hennepin County Public Works is seeking an Engineering Technician to join the Design division within the Transportation Project Delivery department. This position will work as part of a team to deliver roadway reconstruction projects with opportunities for professional and technical growth through training and working with other experienced roadway design professionals.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the Hennepin County Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340, and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours are flexible between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform advanced Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) using software such as OpenRoads Designer.
  • Prepare complete and accurate construction plans by applying roadway design criteria that includes complex geometric layouts, developing typical sections, and detailed design standards.
  • Compute, balance, and verify roadway geometrics, contract quantities, earthwork volumes, and cost estimates.
  • Analyze vehicle turning movements using AutoTURN or similar software to ensure design feasibility and safety.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for project tracking and compliance.
  • Participate in researching and developing technical guidelines and design standards in accordance with MnDOT and other regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in providing direction, training, and quality control for other technicians and team members.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals and timelines are met.

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
    • Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
    • Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Computing construction quantities using MnDOT’s Transport List bid items, including estimating quantities through methods such as area/volume calculations, linear measurements, material takeoffs, and tabulation based on project plan geometry.
    • Preparing roadway plan sheets from preliminary design through final construction documents, including title sheets, general layouts, construction plans, removal plans, and standard plan sheets, while ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to project specifications.
    • Utilizing complex design software, such as OpenRoads, InRoads, Geopak, Civil 3D, GIS, spreadsheets, or databases.
    • Leading or coordinating work teams and collaborating across disciplines.
    • Interpreting MnDOT Standard Design Manuals, Technical Memoranda, construction plans, and specifications.
  • Ability to:
    • Apply critical thinking and sound judgement within established guidelines.
    • Manage multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively under minimal supervision.
    • Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
