Job Description

About the Department

The Department of Biology at the University of the South seeks applications for a 1-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Molecular Biology & Genetics to begin August 2026. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment with benefits.

Position Appointment Details:

  • Faculty
  • Visiting Assistant Professor
  • Non-tenure-track

Position Duties

The Visiting Assistant Professor will teach a total of six (6) teaching units across the fall and spring semesters; a laboratory section counts as one teaching unit. The teaching load will include Genetics and one additional course in the candidate’s area of specialization.

The Sewanee Biology Department offers three tracks in Biology—Molecular Biology & Genetics, Integrative Biology, and Ecology & Biodiversity—and also supports the Biochemistry and Neuroscience majors. The department serves a strong population of majors, including a thriving pre-health preparation program, and makes extensive use of the university’s natural areas in teaching.

Although research is not an expectation of this position, the University provides limited support for research activities and travel to professional conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

Strong candidates will demonstrate thoughtful, inclusive, and engaging approaches to undergraduate education, along with relevant teaching experience in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related disciplines.

Other Qualifications

For preliminary review, applicants must submit:

  • A cover letter (maximum of two pages) describing their approach to teaching and relevant experience

  • A curriculum vitae

  • Contact information for three (3) references

Application review will begin on March 15, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
