Job Description

Position Summary: Counsels and aids individuals with behavioral, interpersonal, alcohol or substance/drug abuse conditions by performing the following duties personally. Responsible for ensuring that all critical tasks are fulfilled on a timely basis.


Critical Tasks: 

  • Maintains exclusive focus upon patients and their needs without significant distraction by administrative and non-patient contact activities.
  • Complies fully with all patient medical records and information privacy regulations, state and federal.
  • Takes all steps necessary to fully ensure employee patient and medical data confidentiality and security by all clinic staff.
  • Successfully melds local traditional approaches of mind, body and spirit guidance with contemporary best behavioral health practices while ensuring that services are successful in terms of health and life quality.
  • Collaborates with licensed staff members to ensure that a successful balance of traditional and contemporary treatment methodologies is utilized to the benefit of patients and treatment outcomes.
  • Interviews patients, reviews records, and confers with other professionals to evaluate condition of patients.
  • Prepares and maintains electronic health records, reports and case histories on a highly accurate and timely basis.
  • Provides counseling services in a highly effective and successful manner to all patients and related parties
  • to assist patients in overcoming behavioral issues and/or alcohol, drug dependency and substance abuse issues
  • Determines and provides appropriate and beneficial referral services based upon patient conditions and needs
  • to other support services for purposes such as medical evaluation and treatment, social services, and employment services
  • Provides training and guidance to other staff members on subjects of local cultural beliefs and practices.
  • Effectively manages assigned case load in an efficient manner while maintaining rapid responsiveness to all individuals in need of assistance.
  • Monitors conditions of patients to evaluate success of intervention, and adapts treatment as needed.
  • Interfaces in a highly patient focused manner with Clinical Managers and other licensed professionals.
  • Remains available as needed for assistance to patients assigned.
  • Performs all job functions in a manner that indicates caring for patients on a consistent basis as well as non-abandonment of all patients in the view of those patients.
  • Maintains and expresses a positive and encouraging outlook with all patients.
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with enterprise safety and emergency management programs.
  • Demonstrates ability to regularly change priorities to accomplish all tasks despite frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, while performing all essential functions.
  • Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED required, Associates Degree in Counseling, Social work or similar field from an accredited college or university preferred.
    • 1 year of behavioral health and/or substance use treatment service experience required.
    • 1 year experience working with Native American populations required.
    • Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint clearance card required.
    • Current and continuing CPR/First aid and/or BLS training and certifications required.
    • State of Arizona driver’s license with no significant violations during the last 5 years.
    • Enrolled in a federally recognized tribe required. Gila River Indian Community or Ak Chin Community member preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
