JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The job of teacher - high school is done for the purpose of developing students’ academic and interpersonal skills through academic courses of study and implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. Instructs and supervises a diverse group of students by establishing a positive, respectful learning environment, providing ample and varied learning opportunities and promoting high standards of performance for all students regardless of their background and developmental levels.
Hood River Valley High School is seeking a dedicated, inquiry-driven Science Educator to join our faculty for a part-time, temporary assignment. This role is designed for a collaborative professional who is eager to work alongside a high-performing science department to deliver rigorous, student-centered instruction. The teacher will work closely with the high school Science department team to meet the needs of our students. The primary instructional focus includes Pattern Physics and Biology courses. Classes and content areas may change based on need.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Meets the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-045). Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Essential duties of this position include the following.
- Model and teach respect with an awareness of diversity.
- Effectively work with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assesses students for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, goals, etc.
- Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
- Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments and/or skills (e.g. lab experiments, athletic techniques, etc.) for the purpose of providing the students with the necessary skills to perform the tasks safely and/or accurately.
- Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students. Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study.
- Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
- Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
- Maintain regular attendance at work and work activities, and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedule.
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, IEP meetings, PLC meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting credential requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Valid Oregon teacher’s license with a Chemistry, Physics or Integrated Science endorsement.
- Understanding of human growth and development patterns, learning theory and brain research. Content knowledge in subject areas taught.
- Familiarity with a variety of age appropriate instructional, assessment and classroom management strategies that reflect current research on best practices.
- Experience working with English Language learners.
- Familiarity with state standards and curriculum frameworks for high school levels. Knowledge and experience with differentiated instruction.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of state and federal education laws and of student and staff rights.
- Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations.
- Ability to effectively manage and supervise students and their work.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred to support our diverse student population and community.
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
- Possess a valid Oregon Teaching License with a Physics, Biology Chemistry or Integrated Science endorsement.
