ABOUT METRC
Metrc is the most trusted and experienced provider of cannabis regulatory systems in the United States and is growing extremely rapidly to expand globally. We provide a solution that combines advanced software, radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, a dedicated customer-support team, and a secure database to track and trace cannabis from growth, harvest, and processing to testing, transport, and sale. As Release Manager, you will have the opportunity to thrive in a fast-moving, fluid environment, and be passionate about implementing change, great processes and procedures in a commercial setting at a fast-growing technology company.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
Metrc is seeking an experienced Release Manager to establish, lead, and continuously improve our release management function. This is a high-impact, highly autonomous role for a practitioner who is energized by building — someone who brings both the strategic perspective to design a release process and the hands-on discipline to execute it. Reporting to the Head of Quality and working closely with the broader Product team, the Release Manager will serve as the central point of coordination and accountability across the full software release lifecycle.
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in release management within complex, multi-team software environments and is comfortable operating independently. You will have the opportunity to shape how Metrc approaches releases from the ground up, making a meaningful and lasting contribution to the quality and predictability of our platform.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Core duties and responsibilities include the following.
Release Process Design & Ownership
- Design and lead Metrc’s end-to-end release management process, spanning intake, scheduling, deployment coordination, and post-release review.
- Establish release governance standards in collaboration with Engineering, QA, and Product, including freeze windows, deployment windows, cross-functional readiness criteria, and branching conventions.
- Develop and maintain release runbooks, escalation paths, and rollback procedures to support consistent, reliable delivery.
- Define and steward a repeatable release cadence that aligns with organizational priorities and external commitments.
- Maintain a comprehensive release calendar with full visibility across feature releases, hotfixes, parallel workstreams, and regulatory deliverables.
Cross-Functional Coordination & Dependency Management
- Act as the primary release coordinator across Product, Engineering, QA, Support, and GTM teams, ensuring alignment on scope, timing, and readiness expectations.
- Proactively identify and manage cross-team dependencies, surfacing scheduling conflicts and delivery risks ahead of release milestones.
- Facilitate go/no-go readiness reviews and coordinate cross-functional release decisions grounded in objective, documented criteria.
- Track and resolve release blockers with a strong sense of ownership, keeping workstreams moving without requiring escalation.
- Stay informed on regulatory timelines and state-specific compliance obligations that may influence release scope or scheduling at Metrc.
Release Communication & Stakeholder Alignment
- Own the full spectrum of release communications, including internal announcements, pre-release briefings, customer-facing change notifications, and post-release summaries.
- Adapt technical release information into clear, accurate messaging tailored for executive, operational, and external audiences.
- Establish and maintain a communication rhythm that keeps stakeholders well-informed and minimizes ambiguity around release activities.
- Provide timely, accurate release status updates to leadership and proactively surface risks before they escalate.
Documentation, Tooling & Traceability
- Own the documentation framework for release management, including changelogs, release notes, process guides, and version history, maintained in Confluence and Jira.
- Configure and govern Jira workflows, release boards, and dashboards to provide real-time release visibility across the organization.
- Define documentation standards and promote consistency across teams contributing to release artifacts.
- Ensure release records meet internal audit, traceability, and compliance requirements appropriate to a regulated SaaS environment.
- Evaluate and implement tooling improvements to Jira and Confluence that reduce manual effort and enhance release transparency.
Quality Integration & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with the Head of Quality to align the release process with QA standards and ensure quality readiness is a formal input into every release decision.
- Lead post-release retrospectives and translate findings into documented process improvements that are tracked and implemented.
- Track and analyze release health metrics — including cycle time, escape rate, and rollback frequency — to identify trends and drive improvement over time.
- Contribute a quality perspective to release planning discussions and support the team in upholding release standards consistently.
QUALIFICATIONS- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Required
- 5+ years of experience in release management or technical program management within a SaaS or software product environment.
- Demonstrated experience building or significantly maturing a release management process, including the ability to work with limited existing structure.
- Advanced proficiency with Jira, including workflow configuration, release boards, custom dashboards, and reporting; hands-on Confluence administration and documentation governance.
- Solid understanding of software development lifecycles, Agile/Scrum methodologies, and sprint-based or continuous delivery models.
- Proven ability to manage complex, multi-team release schedules with competing priorities and firm external deadlines.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to independently produce release notes, executive-level briefings, and process documentation.
- Strong self-direction and organizational skills, with a track record of creating clarity and structure in dynamic environments.
- Experience in regulated, compliance-driven, or government-adjacent industries where audit trails and traceability requirements are central to operations.
Preferred
- Familiarity with CI/CD-adjacent concepts — including pipeline awareness, environment management, and deployment coordination — sufficient to collaborate effectively with Engineering teams.
- Experience with change management frameworks such as CAB or ITIL within regulated or enterprise SaaS environments.
- Background in GovTech, HealthTech, FinTech, or other compliance-driven verticals where release accuracy carries regulatory consequence.
- Familiarity with SAFe or release train coordination models for multi-team delivery environments.
- ITIL Foundation, SAFe, CSM, or PMP certification.
- Experience with cannabis technology, state regulatory platforms, or track-and-trace systems is a meaningful plus.
