Job Description

Job Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Instrument Person to join our land surveying team. This role supports field operations for topographic, construction, and as-built mapping projects. You will work closely with the Party Chief and other field staff to ensure accurate data collection and mapping using industry-standard equipment and software.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain survey instruments, including total stations, GPS, and data collectors
  • Assist in conducting topographic surveys, as-built mapping, and construction layout
  • Work with Carlson Software to record and process field data
  • Ensure proper care and calibration of all instruments used in the field
  • Follow established procedures for field data collection and documentation
  • Collaborate with the Party Chief to execute project tasks effectively and on time
  • Comply with all site safety requirements, including holding a valid SST Card

Qualifications:

  • Comply with all site safety requirements, including holding a valid SST Card (OSHA 40)
  • Experience in land surveying, especially in topographic, as-built, and construction mapping
  • Familiarity with Carlson Software – Required
  • Union membership is preferred; willing to train motivated individuals without prior union affiliation
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measurements and recordings
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior work experience in a unionized surveying environment
  • Knowledge of construction site protocols and documentation standards
  • FAA Part 107 UAV Pilot Certification and experience operating UAVs for aerial mapping
  • Hands-on experience with Leica LiDAR scanners for high-accuracy 3D data collection
  • Familiarity with managing or working on multiple survey projects simultaneously
