Job Description

The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), located in downtown Chicago, is currently accepting applications to fill the IT - Infrastructure, Internship. The RTA oversees financing, secures funding, and conducts transit planning for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace. The RTA manages these three Service Boards’ five-year capital programs. Also, to help riders with disabilities and older adults across Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties, the agency issues Reduced Fare and Ride Free permits, assesses eligibility for ADA Paratransit service, and oversees specialized travel training.


Under the direction of the Infrastructure Supervisor, Infrastructure and Technology, the Intern will support the IT department in delivering technical services, maintaining systems, and assisting in the day-to-day operations. This role provides hands-on experience with hardware, software, networking, and support services.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Technical Support

· Assist with help desk tasks: logging tickets, troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues.

· Provide on-site and remote support to users under supervision.

· Support installation, configuration, and maintenance of IT equipment (laptops, printers, peripherals).

2. System Maintenance & Monitoring

· Assist with system updates and antivirus monitoring.

· Support routine maintenance tasks like hardware inventory.

3. Network & Infrastructure Support

· Assist with basic network troubleshooting (e.g., connectivity issues, cabling checks).

· Help monitor network performance using provided tools.

4. Document & Process Support

· Create or update technical documentation, user guides, and SOPs.

· Help document system configurations, network diagrams, and support logs.

5. Project Assistance

· Contribute to ongoing IT projects (e.g., software rollouts, hardware refreshes, cloud migrations).

· Conduct research or testing for proposed solutions.

6. Security and Compliance

· Support basic cybersecurity practices: password management, access control audits, software compliance checks.


The ideal candidate is currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.


Other qualifications desired are:

· Basic knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Java, PowerShell).

· Familiarity with network systems and cybersecurity principles.

· Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

· Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

· Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.


The intern is expected to work up to 30 hours per week.

Salary will be $22.00 per hour.
