The sterile processing technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, packaging, disinfection, and sterilization of medical and surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.  Service delivery is consistent with ANSI/AAMI, APIC, AORN, and CMS guidelines, rules, and regulations. RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

	<li>Collecting used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination.</li>
	<li>Manually cleaning of contaminated equipment and instruments.</li>
	<li>Operating and maintaining decontamination and sterilization equipment.</li>
	<li>Inspecting instruments and equipment for meticulous cleaning and proper functioning.</li>
	<li>Sorting, preparing, and packaging instruments for sterilization.</li>
	<li>Monitoring and operating sterilization equipment.</li>
	<li>Troubleshooting equipment and promptly reporting any issues or problems with equipment.</li>
	<li>Ensures operation of equipment by verifying daily testing and recommended preventive maintenance requirements are completed; calling for repairs; and evaluating new equipment and techniques.</li>
	<li>Preparing and delivering equipment and instruments for to the proper storage area.</li>
	<li>Maintaining records of testing, cleaning, and sterilization procedures.</li>
	<li>Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings.</li>
	<li>Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving methods.</li>

Sterile Processing Technician

Requires strong English communication, basic computer skills, flexibility, and ability to take call within 45 minutes.

DEFINITION:  Under the supervision of the SPD Supervisor, the Sterile Processing Technicians are responsible to identify, issue, and charge for patient care supplies and equipment.  SPD Technicians are also responsible for reprocessing goods from the decontamination phase through the terminal sterilization process.  EDUCATION:  High school diploma or GED preferred.  REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS (IF APPLICABLE):  Must obtain specialty certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution within one year of employment (CRCST).   MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Previous healthcare experience preferred.  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous Central Services experience preferred.<div> </div><div> </div>
