Description of Job Function:
The Data Engineering Intern will work directly with the Business Intelligence team to support the development and maintenance of automated data pipelines, data infrastructure, and analytics workflows. This is a hands-on role. The intern will contribute to real production work alongside the team, gaining practical experience with cloud-based data engineering tools including Azure Databricks and Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2. This internship is well-suited for a student with foundational Python and SQL skills who wants to grow in data engineering and sees a career path in building the systems that power business intelligence and AI.

The intern in this role will use AI-assisted coding tools including Claude Code and Cursor as part of their standard development workflow and will have visibility into the team's broader AI initiatives. We are looking for someone who has already used AI tools in a meaningful way and is eager to go further. Familiarity with prompt engineering or LLM-based workflows is a plus.
 
What you’ll work on
<ul>
<li>Assist in building and maintaining automated data pipelines in Azure Databricks</li>
<li>Write and optimize SQL queries against operational data sources</li>
<li>Support ingestion pipeline development for source systems including internal databases and APIs</li>
<li>Help organize and structure data in Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 following established patterns</li>
<li>Contribute to notebook development, job scheduling, and pipeline testing in Databricks</li>
<li>Document pipeline logic, data flows, and process runbooks</li>
<li>Assist in evaluating and integrating AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor) into the team's development workflow</li>
<li>Explore and research emerging data engineering and AI tools as directed by the Manager</li>
</ul>
 
What you’ll learn

Qualifications
Required:
<ul>
<li>Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, or a related field — all levels welcome including undergraduate, graduate, and recent grads</li>
<li>Working knowledge of Python — comfortable writing scripts and working with pandas</li>
<li>Foundational SQL skills — able to write basic to intermediate queries against relational databases</li>
<li>Curiosity, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new tools quickly</li>
</ul>
 
Preferred:
<ul>
<li>Any exposure to cloud platforms — Azure, AWS, or GCP</li>
<li>Familiarity with Notebooks or similar notebook-based development environments</li>
<li>Experience with Git or version control basics</li>
<li>Prior coursework or project experience in data engineering, ETL, or database design</li>

<h2>About This Role</h2>
The primary purpose of this position is to provide data warehouse and data analytics development in support of K-State’s strategic efforts, including enrollment management, online learning, accreditation and compliance, and other emergent areas of need. This position will also assist in the design, development and implementation of dimensional models, or other data structures as needed for the enterprise data warehouse (EDW). This is an exciting time to join our team. The position provides capacity to strengthen the user service capacity for BI tool/dashboards, data requests, as well as some external surveys.
<h2>Worksite Description</h2>
This position is Hybrid eligible. This role is expected to work on-site approximately three (3) days a week.
All employees must reside in the United States when they begin working to comply with state law. K-State is unable to provide remote or hybrid work opportunities for residents of the state of Idaho.

<li>Experience with Snowflake or other cloud based data warehouse environment</li>
<li>Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or other BI/Dashboard creation tools</li>
<li>Experience in higher education setting</li>
<li>Data retrieval and analytical skills</li>
<li>Experience with SAS, R, Python, or other data analysis tools</li>
</ul>
