Job Description

Job Purpose:

- As a Camp Counselor at Meadowlands Area YMCA, you will play a vital role in creating a safe, fun, and enriching environment for campers. You will be responsible for guiding and mentoring campers through various activities, fostering personal growth, teamwork, and a sense of community. Your leadership and enthusiasm will help shape memorable experiences for campers, ensuring they have a positive and impactful summer camp experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of daily programs under the direction of the Camp Director or Supervisory Staff.
  • Consistently greet campers with a smile and treat them with enthusiasm.
  • Develop positive relationships with families.
  • Keep campers focused and engaged in camp activities.
  • Ensure supervision and tracking procedures are followed AT ALL TIMES.
  • Assist in providing a safe and supportive environment for all children.
  • Assist in keeping accurate documentation of attendance, children’s files, emergency drills, accident/illness/behavior reports, administration of medication and lesson plans.
  • Work cooperatively with all camp staff while planning and implementing all camp activities.
  • Assist in practicing emergency procedures.
  • Assist in all general housekeeping tasks.
  • Assist specialists during activity periods
  • Assist with the management and supervision of children at all times, including activity areas.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of activities appropriate to children’s needs and interests.
  • Assist with ensuring proper sign in/sign out procedures are followed.
  • Assist in the preservation of all program supplies and equipment.
  • Attend all In-Service Workshops and office meetings.
  • Keep certifications current in CPR, First Aid and Blood Bourne Pathogens while receiving necessary and required training in Child Abuse Prevention and other required courses.
  • To be able to constantly stand, walk, bend, run, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch, pushing or pulling, some climbing and balancing as well as lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs.
  • To attend to each child’s interest and programs’ needs and support children’s emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
  • To have an active and open line of communication with Camp Director and Camp Staff, sharing information on children and any other important issues.
  • Be knowledgeable and follow the Policies and Procedures outlined in the Staff Handbook and Parent Handbook.
  • Wear the approved YMCA work attire and name tags. Notify the Camp Director if in need of a name tag or YMCA staff shirt. Should arrive at program 5 minutes before the program starts.
  • All other miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Always maintain a professional demeanor, as you are a representative of the YMCA.
  • Wear Camp Shirt daily
  • Maintain positive attitude, responsibility and self-motivation. Be punctual and reliable.
  • Create a positive and nurturing learning environment to instill youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Compensation Package:

  • $15.92-17 per hour
  • YMCA Employee Membership

HOURS: PT - Seasonal  Hourly

  • Approximately 10-39 hours per week (depending on availability)  
  • Hours vary between 7:00 AM & 6:30 PM
  • Days – Monday to Friday
