Job Description
Position: Bus Driver
Reports to: Director of Transportation
Overview:
The school bus driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. She/he must ensure that the
school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students following an established route, maintain order and
security on the bus and obey all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct set forth in the transportation handbook and the classified
handbook. The school bus driver must also deal with residents, members of the public, and Lake Central staff in a courteous and
respectful manner. The school bus driver must work in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.
Drivers must maintain order and discipline on the bus while driving in a safe and appropriate manner. This required multi-tasking
creates the possibility of high stress levels.
Qualifications:
 Class B CDL with passenger, air brake, and school bus endorsements.
 Indiana Department of Education School Bus Committee Certificate (“yellow card”).
 Criminal background check and Department of Child Services check through the Lake Central School Corporation at the
employee’s expense.
 Be at least 21 years of age.
 Less than 4 points on driving record. Cannot be classified as a ‘prohibited driver’ by the Corporation insurance carrier, based
upon the totality of the driving record.
 Complete bus aide training class. See special needs job description.
 Meet all the requirements under IC 20-27-8-1, School bus drivers and monitors; standards.
Responsibilities:
 Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, polices, and procedures.
 Pick up and deliver students, keeping a set schedule.
 Utilize all forms of communication necessary for bus drivers, including but not limited to: a working phone number,
Corporation email, ParentSquare, and Red Rover.
 Perform daily pre-trip examinations.
 Physically check the bus at the end of every route run to ensure no students are on the bus.
 Clean and fuel the bus as required. This includes sweeping, cleaning windows, and graffiti removal.
 Advise the mechanics of any maintenance or repair needs.
 Maintain order and discipline on the school bus. This includes contacting parents or school personnel as required and
completing relevant paperwork.
 Make sure students are aware of bus rules and responsibilities.
 Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required.
 Perform other duties as required, including but not limited to filling out paperwork, operating wheelchair lift, and conducting
evacuation drills.
 Perform any additional duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
The school bus driver has a moderately strenuous job and requires intense concentration, particularly in poor driving conditions. The
driver must sit for long periods with no guarantee of any breaks. Driver must also be able to lift at least 50 pounds in certain
circumstances.
Driver must satisfy the requirements set forth by the Indiana State School Bus Committee’s Physical Performance Standards.
