Job Description

Saint Michael’s College invites candidates to apply for the Director of Adventure Sports position. SMC is looking to hire a motivated, environmentally conscious professional to lead a college-based outdoor and environmental education program. This role designs, promotes, and delivers outdoor and wilderness programs for students, faculty, and staff, ensuring strong participation and effective management.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops and manages annual budget
  • Provides oversight of all adventure-based programming, Sugarbush Pass Program, Petra Cliffs Pass Program, and expedition-based programs
  • Manages the Adventure Sport Programs’ professional and student staff including selection and termination of student instructors
  • Sets and maintains compliance of technical leadership and technical standards
  • Performs risk management, assessment and mitigation related to Adventure Sports Center programming
  • Ensures high quality, effective instructor training and assessment
  • Plans and implements local, national and international expeditions
  • Serves as a frontline contact for students
  • Member of the Dean of Students team
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of departmental mission and vision statements which support the Strategic Plan and emphasize student success
  • Promotes a better understanding of what it means to be a 24/7 residential campus among students, campus offices, faculty and off campus agencies
  • Participates in weekly supervision meetings, and attends training sessions throughout the academic year
  • Engages difference in a manner that will allow students to learn from the diversity of perspectives, experience and traditions that exist within the College and beyond
  • Plans for, prepares, and implements annual budget in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Develops and maintains appropriate program-based relationships with undergraduate and graduate students
  • Serves as a member of the Risk Assessment Committee related to off-campus travel
  • Deliver Wilderness First Responder course for credit in consultation with Director of Health Science Program

  • Master’s degree in Education or related field plus 5 years of outdoor pursuit’s instruction and/or professional guiding/coaching experience 
  • 5 Years of collegiate programming/administrative experience 
  • Familiarity with New England as a primary area of operations for adventure-based programming 
  • Prepares and delivers written and spoken information to small and large groups. Effectively manages meetings. Often in speaking, represents the institution to the audience. Communicates regularly and effectively with a wide range of groups. 
  • The ability to use various analytical techniques to identify cause-and-effect relationships and then develop plans to change a situation. 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe and Google Suite products 
  • Highly proficient at internet-based research 

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements: 

  • Medical Credentials: Wilderness First Responder (minimum) or Wilderness EMT (preferred) 
  • Holds an upper-level professional credentials in at least one adventure sport discipline such as: ACA Level 5 Instructor, ACA Level 4 Instructor Trainer, British Canoeing Performance Coach, AMGA Single Pitch Provider, AMGA Certified Rock Instructor, BICP Instructor, BICP Instructor Trainer, etc.
