The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a skilled and motivated Water Meter Service Supervisor to lead and coordinate the daily operations of the water meter service program. This position is responsible for supervising staff and contractors, managing operational workflows, and ensuring timely, accurate, and efficient delivery of field services related to water metering. About this Opportunity 
Supervises water utility meter operations, backflow prevention, and field services to ensure compliance, efficiency, and data accuracy. Oversees staff, contractors, budges, and inventory while supporting billing systems and responding to public inquiries.

Position Duties

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations
  • Provides leadership in a team environment by fostering collaboration, accountability, and effective communication among staff and contractors to achieve department goals.
  • Develops commercial and residential meter routes and ensures all field locates are completed in the required timeline and in compliance
  • Supervises upload and download of meter readings, ensuring data integrity for water utility billing software
  • Conducts backflow testing and certification, inspection of water service tapping, geographic information system accuracy corrections, and vehicle maintenance
  • Recommends isolation devices suitable for particular backflow hazards and initiates compliance activities
  • Prepares work orders for service work and closely monitors service contractors’ responses, repairs, and charges
  • Responds to public requests for water meter reading information
  • Conducts trainings on systems, equipment, standard operating procedures, working instructions, and safety procedures
  • Monitors budget controls and expenditures
  • Oversees the department inventory and ensures all inventory is maintained
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalency and
  • Three (3) to five 5 years of experience in water plant and/or distribution system operations or
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License
  • Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification issued by the State of Iowa, or the ability to obtain within one year of employment
  • Grade I Water Distribution Certification issued by the State of Iowa
  • Grade II Water Distribution Certification issued by the State or Iowa, or ability to obtain within one year of employment

  • Supervisory experience

Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm, with the ability to respond to calls after hours
